1968 VFA Grand Final

Hi all,

My dad uncovered some old slides he took before the 1968 Preston v Prahran grand final at Punt Rd Oval. I've used them in a post i did on Punt Rd.

Admin...please delete if plugging your own stuff is innappropriate! VFLfooty link has been in my blogroll for the past couple of years ;)

Stanga, I spotted these a few days ago. Sensational stuff. I was searching Punt Road and stumbled across these. Great colour photo of the Preston v Prahran from Punt Road with a great backdrop. I went to the tigers v bombers clash on Friday. First visit for a Richmond seniors game since watching a practice game against Michael Patterson coached North Adelaide team in 1972. The old VFA Grand Finals would have been great at Punt Road. I was a bit too young for the 1967 and 68 Grand Finals there. Did your dad take any other slides or any old footage from Prahran or Richmond games back then ?

Some brilliant footage from the last Richmond game played at Punt Road back in 1964.

I did attend all the Punt Road GFs surprisingly they didnt pull massive crowds 1967 - 17,000 although some reports had the crowd at 25,000 which I doubt. 1968 - 18,000 and 1969 when it pissed down most of the day only had 10,000 I watched this game from the back of a packed Jack Dyer stand.

The next season 1970 the VFA returned to the Junction Oval and stayed there till 1987

What was the capacity back in 67/68/69 ? Could they sqeeze more than 25,000 ?

I dont think it would have held 25,000 there wasnt much room on the Punt road side and the grandstands were also pretty close to the fence with 17 - 18,000 it looked full enough.

Billy you wonder how on earth they would have squeezed in 46,000 for the Richmond vs Carlton clash in 1949 ?
Still I reckon the atmosphere would have been pretty good at Punt Road for those VFA Grand Finals. The backdrop looking towards Punt Road as well as the old red rattlers passing through would have added to the grounds charm. Junction Oval and Toorak Park also had a great feel about them during VFA finals. Dandy Dollar Dash, Lightning Premierships, Marching Girls and the bands.

You are right it was a good atmosphere but the lack of capacity is one cf the reasons that the VFA chose to go back to the Junction which could still easily hold in excess of 30,000

Stanga, did your dad take any old footage at games back then ?
Some of those old clips are great to look back at.
The only First Division VFA Grand Finals from 1967 that are not around happen to be the 1968/69/70 Grand FINALS. Apparantly an ex Umpire had a few of the original reels which were burnt in a fire in the early 80s. The 68/69 and 70 Grand Finals could have been amongst them. I'll try to ind out a bit more and which games he had.

Hi VFA, would have loved to have been at Punt Rd last Friday but working unfotunately! And that footage from the last Punt Rd game is brilliant, love the story of the19th man also.
Dad often bemoans his lack of foresight in taking his camera to the footy, but I'm glad we've found what we have. There are some pics of the1967 grand final, before and directly after, from dad's vantage point in middle deck of the northern stand. Same vantage spot, there are also some pics from KB's 400th. He's going through slides which is how he found the 68 Punt Rd pics, so I'm hoping there are more discoveries. And somewhere, not sure where, there issuper 8's from KB's 400th and from the standing room in the western stand at the 83 (VFL) grand final, the last time it was standing room. I'm still searching to find where that's gotten to!

Also, mum tooka camera along to Windy Hill back in the 70's...I was able to stick some of the pics together and get a panorama happening. It's also on my blog if you have a search.

Devastating to hear of the old footage which is no longer. Feel like I've seen some bits of footage from 67 but perhaps I'm imagining that?
