Disappointingly it has been confirmed by Channel 7 that the 2026 VFL season will not be broadcast this year.

It is believed that the cost one a major factor in the decision. A petition has been created on Change.org seeking another Free to air broadcaster to pick up the rights to the VFA /VFL.

Vale Sam Landsberger

It’s with deep sadness to announce that popular Herald Sun Sports Journalist Sam Landsberger has been tragically killed in an accident this morning. He wa 35

Sam was a brilliant  sports journalist writing particularly in football and cricket circles. Most recently you may have seen his tweets of emoji schedule for Olympic Games.

I first met Sam around 20 years ago with my work with Richmond Cricket Club in premier cricket and then of course with Frankston Football Club when he was a cadet. We would speak regularly especially over social media. He was an outstanding person and great at what he did.

I would like to send my condolences to his family, friends and work colleagues  I know everyone in VFL community will be thinking of you at this sad time.

If you have any memories or would like to leave any messages please do so in the comments

RIP Sam Landsberger .You will be missed.

Pre Season Podcasts

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone is aware, but there is a fella in the USA, coach of the Des Moines Roosters in the USAFL, Donnie Hess who is conducting a series of interviews with players, coaches and supporters of various state league teams across Australia and posting them on YouTube. He has covered a few of the standalone clubs already, including one with me about being a Frankston supporter. Donnie is very passionate about his footy and is trying to spread as much info about the heartland of the game with his US friends as possible. If you're interested in having a look, my interview with him is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AagpZ9pJcX8&t=2359s

From there you will be able to access all of his interviews, they're generally quite interesting. If you get a chance contact Donnie and have a chat, he absolutely loves the game and is trying to soak up every bit of info he can.

Oh, if you happen to watch my interview, I apologize for the clear irritation going on at the 5 minute mark. While I was sitting in a quiet park talking to my laptop, two clowns with boxing mitts decided to spar not 5 metres from me, making it almost impossible to hear.

Swans list manager fumes over minimal VFL coverage.

From SEN.COM.AU

Reported by Seb Mottram

Kinnear Beatson has hit out at what he says is a complete lack of coverage for the VFL, with the Sydney list manager describing it as “pretty frustrating”.

Beatson suggested the lack of coverage makes it harder for clubs to attract more players to the league.

14 of the 21 VFL clubs are aligned with AFL clubs. The NEAFL and VFL merged in 2020 to create one second-tier competition across Australia’s eastern seaboard.

The SANFL, WAFL, TSL (Tasmania) and NTFL (Northern Territory) remain as standalone leagues.

As Beatson notes, the SANFL and WAFL in particular are covered in depth by those states’ respective media.

When questioned about whether he’d like to see more Under 18 games broadcast to the public, the Swans list boss was quick to vent his frustration with his own state league.

“Look it frustrates the hell of me (the lack of under 18’s footy coverage) but what frustrates me more is that we’ve got a new VFL competition, the best second-tier competition in the land behind the AFL and the lack of media on that competition is just staggering,” Beatson said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“To my recollection, there wasn’t an article in the Herald Sun or The Age about the second-best competition (in the land), so it’s pretty hard to promote players and attract players to play in it if it’s not promoted.

“I mean the SANFL and the WAFL - all be it clearly in different markets - they’ve got features on their news, their TV stations, the Adelaide Advertiser, they’d have full supplements on the teams, the scores, the best (on ground), what’s going on in the competition and we’ve got nothing.

“In the best competition behind the AFL, it’s just staggering and the apathy towards promoting this part of the football calendar... I don’t know who runs it or whatever but it’s pretty frustrating.”

The 2022 VFL premiership was taken out by Casey, affiliated wih Melbourne, after downing Southport in the Grand Final by 32 points. That game was attended by 4,500 fans.
