Oakleigh vs Camberwell 1979 2nd Div GF

Hi all,

I am an ex Oakleigh player (Russell Curtain) who played full back on Gary Hammond for Oakleigh in the 1979 GF loss to Camberwell. I was a 19 y/o who was awarded Oakleighs best player on the day and subsequently made vice captain the following year (David Wenn was captain). In that game I was actually hit in the head with a full can of beer thrown fron the crowd. I fell to the ground and suffered some concussion. The can was thrown at Gary hammond by an ex Oakleigh player!!!

I retired at the end of 1980 with approx 65 senior games at the age of 20

I am trying to find a copy of the GF of which I have never seen. This would be the only footage that I know of me playing and would love to show to my two boys now aged 20 and 17.

Any help would be appreciated

Oakleigh v Sunshine Round 14 1985

Just watched a past VFA game on DVD. Oakleigh v Sunshine which was a Round 14 clash back in 1985. Very tough clash with no holds barred. Oakleigh led at quarter time 4.5 to 4.1. The second quarter was also pretty close with Oaks still leading by 4 points 9.7 to 8.9. Litchfield booted 4 goals for the quarter with some strong marks. Butch Litchfield had 5 goals up to half time for the crows with gun forward Pretto also kicking 5 for the oaks. The third quarter was all Sunshine as they led 13.17 to 9.10 and playing some great footy. The crows booted the first 2 goals and had a 43 point lead at the five minute mark of the last quarter. The devils produced a great comeback to eventually win a thriller 16.13.109 to 15.18.108. The crowd was very loud and you would think it was a grand final. During the last quarter their was also some drizzling rain to make conditions even tougher. Sunshine and Oakleigh has some classic contests in the mid 80s. In the 1985 Preliminary Final there was quite a few scuffles in a very tough and high standard game where Oakleigh won 17.16.118 to 17.6.108. In 1986 Round 4 clash Sunshine won 18.9.117 to Oakleigh's 18.6.114. This was another pretty tough game where Litchfield kicked the winning goal after being felled by Ross from Oakleigh. Ross copped it from the Sunshine supporters as he was going up the race where he gave them the two fingered salute. In the return clash the Oaks won 15.10.100 to 11.13.79. In 1987 Round 5 clash it was another close game with the crows winning by 6 points at Skinner Reserve 13.16.94 to 13.10.88. In round 16 the Oaks were too good at home 16.16.112 to 11.10.76. 1988 was the year they met in the Grand Final at Windy Hill. In the lead up games it started in Round 4 Oakleigh 21.23.149 to Sunshine 18.10.118. The met two more times in Round 14 and Round 18 where the Oaks won both. Sunshine was trailing Dandenong badly by more than 5 goals in the 1st semi final at Shepley Oval. The crows came back hard to score a great win which was even better considering the wet muddy conditions. The Preliminary Final they also trailed Werribee at Chirnside Park but produced another come from behind last quarters to win narrowly. Oakleigh won in the wet at home against Werribee in the second semi 14.18.102 to 7.7.49. In the Grand Final it was a pretty psychical game with the Oaks winning 25.19.169 to 15.9.99. Oakleigh was pretty dominant in 1988 losing to Dandenong in Round 5 by 34 points at Shepley Oval and in Round 6 at Camberwell 17.12.114 to 13.13.91. The Oaks lost to Camberwell again in Round 15 in what was Camberwell's last ever win in the VFA. The cobras won 13.10.88 to 11.10.76.
I'll endeavour to get the last quarter of this game on here. Will get a copy of this game to Station Hotel where hopefully he can put the last quarter to view.

Frankston Geelong West crowds

In a recent post reference was made to attendances at Frankston v Geelong games.
Its certainly a long way to travel, and back in the 1980's Geelong West players were getting jack of having to travel back from places like Dandenong, Springvale and Frankston late on Sunday nights, and then having to get up and work Monday mornings. Consequently Roosters tended to lose players to the GFL, because they could play Saturdays in Geelong.
Biggest crowd I found was Frankstons first year in the 1st division when 8,000 (paying $3,106) saw the home game against Geel W. Generally after that the average crowd between these 2 was about 3,000. In 1984 they played in the 1st division preliminary final, but on a wet, miserable day only 2,645 (including me)turned up at the Junction Oval (whereas on the same day 10,736 turned up at Toorak Park to see Box Hill crush Oakleigh in the Div 2 Grand Final).

Video of Past VFA Games

I am slowly collecting a catelogue of VFA Grand Finals. So far I have the following:

1976 Division 2 Williamstown versus Mordialloc
1986 Division 1 Williamstown versus Coburg
1990 Williamstown versus Springvale
1993 Werribee versus Port Melbourne.

The ABC Network have Divison 1 Grand Finals dating back to 1980 and I believe to buy them from the ABC the cost is $165 per game.

The Grand Finals I have I will copy for VFA fans. Just contact me and let me know waht Grand Finals you want.

Cheers

1978 VFA 1st Division Grand Final - Prahran v Preston

I see someone kindly uploaded highlights of the game to the website. Is there any chance the full game could be put up as a torrent so as to remove the blockiness associated with the website upload if anyone has it?

Thanks. I am after classic VFA matches for my collection on DVD.

Yarraville

Hats off to the YarravilleSeddon Eagles for having a bunch of old VFA photos on its website (under history).

Some genuine stars in Mark Fotheringham, Kevin Sait, Dennis Pagan, John Sharp, Pat Wellington etc. Also some great game shots against Williamstown and Northcote. A black and white of a 1978 Waverley game (when both clubs were in Div 2 and were struggling to make the finals) demonstrates how good the crowds were back then.

If anyone can put some names to faces of the Northcote players i'd be interested.
