Just watched a past VFA game on DVD. Oakleigh v Sunshine which was a Round 14 clash back in 1985. Very tough clash with no holds barred. Oakleigh led at quarter time 4.5 to 4.1. The second quarter was also pretty close with Oaks still leading by 4 points 9.7 to 8.9. Litchfield booted 4 goals for the quarter with some strong marks. Butch Litchfield had 5 goals up to half time for the crows with gun forward Pretto also kicking 5 for the oaks. The third quarter was all Sunshine as they led 13.17 to 9.10 and playing some great footy. The crows booted the first 2 goals and had a 43 point lead at the five minute mark of the last quarter. The devils produced a great comeback to eventually win a thriller 16.13.109 to 15.18.108. The crowd was very loud and you would think it was a grand final. During the last quarter their was also some drizzling rain to make conditions even tougher. Sunshine and Oakleigh has some classic contests in the mid 80s. In the 1985 Preliminary Final there was quite a few scuffles in a very tough and high standard game where Oakleigh won 17.16.118 to 17.6.108. In 1986 Round 4 clash Sunshine won 18.9.117 to Oakleigh's 18.6.114. This was another pretty tough game where Litchfield kicked the winning goal after being felled by Ross from Oakleigh. Ross copped it from the Sunshine supporters as he was going up the race where he gave them the two fingered salute. In the return clash the Oaks won 15.10.100 to 11.13.79. In 1987 Round 5 clash it was another close game with the crows winning by 6 points at Skinner Reserve 13.16.94 to 13.10.88. In round 16 the Oaks were too good at home 16.16.112 to 11.10.76. 1988 was the year they met in the Grand Final at Windy Hill. In the lead up games it started in Round 4 Oakleigh 21.23.149 to Sunshine 18.10.118. The met two more times in Round 14 and Round 18 where the Oaks won both. Sunshine was trailing Dandenong badly by more than 5 goals in the 1st semi final at Shepley Oval. The crows came back hard to score a great win which was even better considering the wet muddy conditions. The Preliminary Final they also trailed Werribee at Chirnside Park but produced another come from behind last quarters to win narrowly. Oakleigh won in the wet at home against Werribee in the second semi 14.18.102 to 7.7.49. In the Grand Final it was a pretty psychical game with the Oaks winning 25.19.169 to 15.9.99. Oakleigh was pretty dominant in 1988 losing to Dandenong in Round 5 by 34 points at Shepley Oval and in Round 6 at Camberwell 17.12.114 to 13.13.91. The Oaks lost to Camberwell again in Round 15 in what was Camberwell's last ever win in the VFA. The cobras won 13.10.88 to 11.10.76.
I'll endeavour to get the last quarter of this game on here. Will get a copy of this game to Station Hotel where hopefully he can put the last quarter to view.
