JOHN Martin, a champion premiership player at the Seagulls, says his distaste for Port Melbourne began when his late father told him stories of how Borough supporters would pelt stones at Williamstown players after famous victories at North Port Oval[now Teac Oval] in the 1920s.
''They had to run to get the train at North Port Oval or else they would get hit,'' Martin, a Liston Medal winner in 1956, said. ''Of course, we were more civilised in the '50s, but there was still a fair bit of rivalry.''
When Williamstown meets Port Melbourne in tomorrow's VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium, club veterans hope both teams will bring the tribalism that has shaped their bitter rivalry since 1886.
