WILLIAMSTOWN'S bid for back-to-back Foxtel Cup titles collapsed at the first hurdle.

The Seagulls, who won the inaugural version of the state league knockout competition last year, were eclipsed by South Australian National Football League outfit South Adelaide at the MCG by five points, 6.12 (48) to 6.7 (43).

The VFL side rested some of its experienced players, including skipper Ben Jolley, but still entered the clash as favourites.

Ed Carr (22 possessions) was outstanding for Williamstown, while Western Bulldogs-listed Clay Smith (18) and Lin Jong (17) also impressed.

The Seagulls were outgunned in the middle, meaning supply to the forwards was limited.

In a scrappy battle, the Seagulls led by five points at the first break before South Adelaide found its form to enter halftime with a three-point lead.

The Panthers had the chance to close the contest in the third term, but managed just two goals from eight scores in a dominant period.

Williamstown mounted a late fightback but ultimately fell short.

The Seagulls will resume their VFL campaign against Coburg Tigers on Sunday at Whitten Oval.
