Which key players from last season are yet to re-sign?

Paul,

Fordham and Lambert are big losses, both massively important to us last season. Kai Owens, Max Williams and James Rendell would be my targets to get stitched up quickly.

Yep, getting those three back is important, for sure.

Another huge loss. Ryley Stoddart to Williamstown.

Saw a comment on BigFooty saying that Stoddard and Kai Owens were probably leaving Frankston. Stings to see Stoddard go, hopefully the part about Owens isn't true.

Yep, losing Stoddart is a debacle. If Owens is added to that, then this is yet another year of changing coaches and having to rebuild. A couple of years back we were every chance of playing finals before covid bit us.....and with a young team that was seriously going places. Now, as we continue to show a lack of stability off the ground, we lose the guts of our team and are in danger of slipping to rock bottom without some good replacements.

It's time this club got serious about its' direction. With what is ahead in terms of changes to the VFL, we won't have a club in ten years time, maybe even five.

Another former Dragon, Kornberg is doing a good job getting his former players who want opportunities to come down the highway.

Didn't know he was originally from the Dragons. It's a good sign in my opinion, doubt he would be drawing his former players over if they didn't think well of him.

Wonder if he can bring Brodie McLaughlin back home with him from the Gold Coast Suns? If not drafted again, I guess he will end up at Port or Willi...

I knew the pre-season training was starting for the women's team this week, figures the men's would be around the same time.

Email went out to Frankston members yesterday as pre-season 2024 starts this week. Outright states that this is our best year for player retention in a fair while. The loss of Fordham, Lambert, and Stoddard are blows but hopefully we've retained enough of our list to avoid losing momentum next year.

It's a position we've needed filled for a while. Forward line has shown promise this year so hopefully Gown is the missing piece. Will have to pop down to training one night and see how things are shaping.

For our Frankston posters, we encourage for people to come down to Frankston training at Kinetic Stadium, to see how our squad is preparing for season 2024.

Training times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30pm to 7:30pm, Saturdays 7:30am to 10am

It's unfortunate to see him go, but this is a semi-professional comp after all. Sometimes things will come up in a player's life that have to take priority over footy. It's a shame we couldn't hold on to him for next year but wish him all the best.

Definitely planning on getting down to training this week. Will most likely be there Saturday morning and hopefully can make it down on the Thursday night.

Shame Kai is moving on. Would have loved to see him stay. Didn't think he was much chop when he arrived but he worked hard and the improvement came. Unlucky not to be drafted this year. Hopefully we will see some more decent recruiting to replace the talent that has departed.

Saw on the club's Facebook story that Max Williams is at training tonight, which is encouraging to see. Never saw any club posts saying he's re-signed but if he's still at training then you'd think it's at least a possibility. Really hope he stays for next year.

He played for us in 2022 then got drafted by Gold Coast at the end of the year. Thought it was worth bringing up since he joins Fordham and Stoddart as an ex-Frankston player.

Not as if much changes from this year. McLaughlin kicked a bag against us when we got demolished by the Suns. Hopefully when we play Williamstown we actually show up.

most of those players (Cavarra, Pongracic, Newman, Gray, etc) came to Willi when Frankston surrended their licence - there has only been a few come this way since such as Mitch Cox and the guys this year but there is usually a reason such as travel

Its very frustrating losing quality players as often as we do, and it really bites when they go to other standalones. One day I hope, one or two of the dozens of these guys who when delisted, will return to the club that gave them the chance to play AFL.

The only one I can remember who returned to Frankston was back in 1992 when the great John Parker was delisted by Brisbane...

Port and  especially Willi are recruiting extremely well, and according to Paul Amy, Southport have done well also. Noticably lagging behind again is Frankston. Looks like another kleiner year coming up unless they can add some size and experience to the list...

Havent heard a thing from Preston and Coburg.

I'm certainly hoping to hear more recruiting news over the next couple months. So far I'm impressed with who we've picked up, but I wouldn't mind a big name signing if possible.

I'm hoping 2024 will be a year where we get a glimpse of what this team is capable of. My gut feeling is that finals isn't really on the cards just yet. With a new coach and new system, I'm accepting that it might take a while for things to click. But I do think we need to at least improve on last year and get ourselves out of the bottom four. Showing some upward momentum will be important both for attracting players and supporters in the next few years.

If we cant get some big names soon we are in trouble for next year. Yet again, the losses are far greater than the gains.

Fordham, Stoddart, Lambert, Owens are just about the four best players from last year. Thank God we kept Voss and Mynott.

This is the last week of training before the Christmas break, so I'm expecting a bit of a quiet period from the club over December. Not sure when things start up again but I'll ask when I go down there on Thursday. Hopefully come January we hear a bit more on the recruitment front.

Also related to pre-season, the VFL is apparently going ahead with the pre-season carnival involving the six Victorian standalones again next year, but at a different venue than Cragieburn. Frankston's been suggested as a possible venue.

My 2 cents, pre season stand alone carnival is a great idea with perhaps moving it from stand alone venue each year (I know that isn't possible with all clubs due to cricket commitments). It helps raise a small amount of money towards the hosting club and further strengthens the relationship between the old vfa clubs.

Reading the above sentiment I feel Port is in a similar position, they have indeed recruited well but feel that perhaps the club is overselling the recruits they have made... e.g. a swans recruit who played no first team games was sold as a Swans AFL recruit, theirs definitely a few more examples. Some fans I feel may be getting overly optimistic but I feel as of today we are not finals material. This may be especially evident when considering that Naismith,  Gasper, Clarke, Phillips have all gone. Whilst the replacements one could argue are very good at this stage they don't exceed our losses.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, being darkish and (politically incorrect) I can say a hijacking was coming.. feel free to move to the Port Melbourne thread if you want Northport.

Rotating the carnival between standalone clubs (assuming they can make arrangements to host it) is a great idea and a good opportunity to give the standalone clubs some needed promotion.

I'm certainly not expecting finals next year either. Between the players we've lost and having a new coach and system in place, I'm accepting that we won't see success straight away. But player retention and building a strong culture are priorities for the club and I'm cautiously optimistic we're laying the foundation for that. I still think we need to get out of the bottom four and finish with 6-7 wins. We need to show some upward momentum in order to attract both players and supporters.

Our new CEO and coach are both pretty impressive characters thus far. Jackson Kornberg has seemed to connect to the players seamlessly and quickly, while Fraser Bayne seems a real go-getter off the field. We have recruits, but no big names. Yes, we have lost quite a few important players from last season. We face yet another season of rebuilding. Hopefully the group connect well and most importantly, stick together beyond this season.

This ever-present changing of direction at Frankston has to stop if we are going to have a future. The club wants people to buy memberships,,,,,,well the desire to buy a membership comes from feeling a connection to the club - can't feel much of that when players, coaches and administrators seem to change on at least a bi-yearly basis.

I firmly believe that we have the right people to lead the club to success. It seems our coach wants to recruit players interested in playing for the club, rather than just using us as a stepping stone to the AFL. That's good news, because history tells us that those blokes give us a year or two then vanish, whether they reach their goal or not.

Pre-season training has been impressive so far. Looks like about 55 out there on the track at the moment.

The personnel changes so far do have me optimistic. From what I've seen at training, Jackson Kornberg seems to get along very well with the players while also being firm and direct when required. Being of a similar age to some of these guys while also having a long history in coaching probably helps him in that area. Fraser is probably the perfect person to lead the club if building community and connection at priority. He's always at the members' drinks nights, often shows up at training sessions, overall a very approachable guy. No doubt we have the right people leading the club.

Next year will certainly be another rebuild of sorts. I'm hoping that with the players we've retained we will remain competitive and get ourselves out of the bottom four, but with the players we've lost and significant overhaul of our coaching staff I accept that it will take time for everything to click. And that's the key for the next few years; committing to this direction and keeping these people together long enough to see the end product.

One positive note, I've seen Max Williams at just about every training session I've been to these past few weeks. I haven't put his name under the re-signed list yet because I haven't seen anything official but you'd think his intention's to stay if he's still coming to training.

Full lists of the ins and outs for each VFL team can be found here.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1072891/2024-list-update-smithys-vfl

Here's what I've been able to find on our new recruits listed here:

Nick Burke: Formerly played for Haileybury College and Sandringham Dragons, made his VFL debut for Geelong in 2021, played for Port Melbourne in 2022/23. Listed on Port's recruitment post as a forward/mid.

Taj Campbell-Farrell: Played for Dandenong Stingrays, won the Morrish Medal in 2022. Suffered compartment syndrome in his feet but played through a large chunk of the season before undergoing treatment. Played for Williamstown in 2023. Predominantly plays in the midfield from what I've read and was apparently a ball magnet at Dangenong.

Will Kennedy: Formerly played for Sandringham Dragons and Caulfield Grammarian. Primarily played in defence, but has experience as a forward and ruckman. Draft profile highlights his strong mobility despite his size (198cm). I'm personally keen to see what he can do; with Nic Minchin gone we need ruck options and I'll be happy to have another defender, especially if we lose Max Williams.

Matt Nelson: Has been around a few clubs, from Berwick Springs to Noble Park to Dandenong Stingrays. Can't find much on him, but he seems to have played mainly as a winger and half back.
