VFL R19 - Port v Preston
Body:

Great day down at Port under glorious sunshine. It's a bit of a shame that there weren't more people there to watch an entertaining game of footy. Crowds have dropped off recently, maybe due to poor results, too many night games and not enough traditional 2pm Sunday games...

Full credit to the club, who put on a free kids entertainment day with a DJ, Band, Facepainting and snacks.

Port again looked good setting up play from the back line and see able to move the ball well, but again struck a few problems with delivery into the forward line. However, some of the link up play through the midfield was outstanding.

The Borough aren't too far off the pace of finals football and 2026 if retention of players is good, and recruiting is well targeted... We could be far better placed than the 5 wins we have had this season.

I'm looking forward to watching the replay to mame a comments on individual players.

One of my Preston friends at the ground thought it was a good crowd, I thought it was ok but far from impressive with more numbers considering the great day, freebies etc expected.
I feel theirs genuine concerns here and I’m not sure what the answer is, club is doing an exceptional job with the match day experience with it being probably the best of all clubs. I hope we are correct that the dwindling crowds are due to performance as that can and eventually be fixed if not I feel we may be heading towards irrelevancy. Club put on a free pre match, snacks free beer for a hour yet from all reports it wasn’t well attended, I remember the days of paid pre match lunches being sold out - nowadays people don’t come to feeebies - that to me is concerning and I’m not sure what the answer is to bringing fans back if team performance isn’t the answer.

Definitely good to see a win, which I was not taking for granted particularly after Preston beat Williamstown. This was definitely a more competitive Preston than the one we faced earlier this season. If I were being pessimistic I would still say that a better side wouldn't have let us get away with some of the mistakes especially in the second quarter, but it was good to see the overall good form from much of our side.

Charlie Clarke was in great form in the second half and Roy George provided some highlights as well. If they can consistently maintain their best form, we may be better set for small forwards next season than I had thought earlier. I thought this was Ned Cahill's best game since the move to the midfield - I haven't been impressed with his recent performances, but this was a solid performance. Hopefully Manton can carry his form from this weekend into the last two games. I've been critical of Tobe Watson, but despite a few mistakes he has been useful in recent weeks. AJ Kuol Mun continued his good season in the ruck, with Sam Grant, who has definitely improved since the beginning of the season, a good second ruck. Kuol Mun will probably be drafted once he puts on a bit more size and becomes more consistent around the ground; hopefully he's one of the re-signings for next season. Tom Graham in particular has stood up in the absence of Highmore; if Highmore returns we should be well set in defence next season - and I hope Highmore does play in defence and not the midfield. The Fraser Rosman as wing/inside mid (mainly wing in this one) experiment is starting to produce better results and the defence seems to have adjusted to the move as well now that Johnston has returned and adding some more height down back, but we do need to keep some of our best defenders in defence rather than moving them! Hooper, Lazzaro, Heppell, Rankin, and Hird were good as usual as well. It's been great to see Rankin return from his shoulder injury and fit right back in.

Good also to see the return of the chocolate cupcakes! Does anyone know when the club museum is projected to open?

Yes mate we plan to have it open on the last home game. Painting the inside at the moment and next week we plan to move stuff in there. I’ll have a look tomorrow when I’m at the club. Theirs been no official announcement as yet as work still has to be done but once we can guarantee an opening date then it’ll be made official. It’s not a huge area but promises to have some great memorabilia in there.

Thanks, truth be told my contribution has been minimal but a couple of others have worked with unbelievable commitment to make it possible.
