WILLIAMSTOWN Football Club general manager Brendan Curry has issued a warning to AFL clubs wanting to ditch their VFL partners amid reports as many as five alignments are under threat.

The Western Bulldogs, affiliated with the Seagulls, want to sever ties and enter a stand-alone reserves team, which could potentially play out of an upgraded Whitten Oval.

But Curry said if the Dogs copied the formula set by Geelong and Collingwood it would be: "an eye-opener".

The Cats and Pies field stand-alone sides, which gives them total control over player and team development.

But the VFL boss said some AFL clubs took for granted the hard work second-tier clubs did for their players and took umbrage at suggestions VFL clubs did not care about player development.
