MOMENTUM can be a wonderful thing but the Devils' free fall was such that a weekend off was a blessing in disguise.
Six consecutive losses put the Devils last on the VFL ladder and have left coach Daryn Cresswell with plenty of headaches.
In three of those matches the side led at the final change only to be overrun, so the break allowed the playing group to sit down and reflect where the club's season stood.
A main training session was held last Thursday at Aurora Stadium, with all the players encouraged to speak out and discuss any problems before the side's big match against Port Melbourne on Saturday.
"We just haven't been able to finish games off, which is a learning thing with a young group," Cresswell said.
"Maybe we do have a loss of confidence in those situations.
"Basically, we assessed the season, where we need to improve and make sure there are actions not just words.
"It was a really positive meeting. The players spoke their minds and their expectations of each other.
"It was very honest and open and I think very beneficial. The players know where we are at and what actions need to be taken to get to the next step."
The week off allowed some players to head back to club footy to find some touch while others -- Cameron Thurley, Paul Koulouriotis and Ken Hall -- were given the time to overcome niggles.
Jason Howard returned to Kingborough from injury in fine style to put his hand up for selection while vice-captain Scott Stephens will return after a calf strain.
Cresswell also saw Launceston's Tim Mohr in action for the Mariners and was impressed with the 18-year-old key backman.
Defender Sam Carins (calf) played only half the under-23 representative game last weekend and is in doubt for this weekend's clash.
Cresswell is confident the second half of the season will provide plenty of improvement as his young players find their feet at the next level.
"We can be a good side if we play with intensity and confidence," he said.
"All we need is 25 per cent improvement collectively as a group and they understand that."
Saturday's game at Bellerive kicks off at 2pm.
