NORTHERN Bullants coach David Teague hopes the club’s link with Carlton makes his side a force to contend with this VFL season.

Teague said although the Bullants’ own list was thinner than last year’s, when it made the elimination finals, Carlton’s list would make them stronger.

“I think we’ll get some real depth from Carlton.

“It’s a lot harder to get a game with Carlton at the moment and quality players can’t get a game in the top 22, which will be a massive advantage for us.

“It’s something you see a bit, that when a club is doing well as AFL level, its VFL team is also very good, like Geelong in 2007.

“Hopefully we can do a similar thing to that.”

He said the Bullants had also picked up some handy recruits.

“Our major recruit is Jason Saddington, who played for us last year but was on Carlton’s list.

“He should be one of the best players in the VFL this year.

“Another top recruit is Jarrod McCorkell.

“He’s had a hamstring injury but played a practice match (on Saturday).

“We also picked up some youngsters from local leagues who look promising. We’ve got a very young list again.”

Teague said the goal was to progress further than last year, when the Bullants made the finals but were knocked out in the first week.

“It will depend on what players are available to us at the end of the season.

“If Carlton is up and running then we should also have plenty of guys available.”

The Bullants will host Bendigo Bombers on Sunday at Princes Park in Round 1.
