VFL R9 - Port Melbourne v Southport

Port Melbourne vs Southport at ETU Stadium 12:05pm

- The Bourough's best chance and creating some belief comes this weekend when we play fifth placed Southport.

About 15 ex AFL players (can anyone confirm that), make them an extremely strong side.

Hopefully a big Port contingent get along to check out the new lights (not operating) and see some inspired footy!

119 Southport to Port 56. The Qlders will give the flag a good shot!

So it's season over for the Borough.

We played a few good passages of good clean footy, but overall missed chances and some diabolical forward entries or skill errors hurt us very very badly.

Southport looked good. They will give the flag a shot as they should be a fairly settled side as the season goes on.

For Port, I think we are a side that looks fairly junior and needs a few more big experienced bodies out there.  I think the 6 player under 22 rule has really hurt Port. The end of the alignment with Oakleigh Charges (to Collingwood) has left a poorer pathway.

We desperately need a reserves side (and a development league), and a genuine pathway U18/U19 club (preferably our own club).

I am sure that would directly impact crowds too and is it helps build a healthy club.

I'm not sure how we should address the remaining games for this season.

Should we try and get games into the kids? It's difficult because I think more than ever with the way the competition is run, it's hard to retain players so that they become 100-150 game players.

Southport are my clear pick for the flag. Werribee and preston to both score  upset wins over gws and Geelong respectively tomorrow. I hope.

Your spot on with everything you said Northport, unfortunately as long as that rule is in place and the low salary cap its going to be extremely difficult for the stand alones (their will be exceptions to this from time to time, like Frankston at the moment). I say for the remainder of the season the club focuses on developing the ones who are most likely to be part of the 6 players who are under 22 next year and fill the rest of the positions with the best side possible. Preston also mentioned at last week's lunch that they viewed these rules as obstacles.

I wonder if all the stand alones united told the AFL their opinion of the competition if that would make a difference, going by history where the stand alones mentioned that they wanted the development league which at best only delayed the cancellation,  I feel the AFL wouldn't care a great deal if clubs spoke up and would keep things as they are at present, sighting Frankston and Southport have done ok under current requirements.

As Port Melbourne supporters we have been spoilt over the years but if we were to struggle year after year fulfilling these requirements I feel that it would test people's patience and would further negatively impact crowds.

Werribee flogging GWS. Great to see. Hopefully preston can get the second of the old vfa teams to win today.
