Victoria have smashed Western Australia by 119 points in today's interleague match at Port Melbourne. This represents the 2nd biggest loss in WA's 198 game history.
Unfortunately for Frankston supporters Ashley Eames was one of the 3 left out before the game. WA began well with the breeze kicking the 1st goal but then couldn't find the goals for the rest of the quarter as the Vics got into the game. Victoria adding 5 goals against the breeze to lead by 20 points at quarter time.
Victoria with the breeze at the back in the 2nd Quarter started to dominate the midfield and began to dominate all over the ground as Dolphin Justin Berry and Sandy's Nick Sautner dominated the forward line and continued to kick goal after goal as the Vics piled on 10 goals and they kept WA goalless to have the game effectively over at half time leading by 80 points.
A stunned crowd at Port Melbourne couldn't believe the half time scoreline. The Vics began the 3rd term were they left as they kicked a further 5 goals to 2 to extend the lead to 98 points at three quarter time.
With the breeze at their back in the final quarter the Vics kicked the first 5 goals to lead by 130 points with about 5 minutes to go until WA kicked a couple of late consolation goals to reduce the final margin to 119 points.
The margin was biggest by a VFA/VFL team since defeating the Australian Amatuers in Hobart in 1989 by 126 points. It is the highest score by a VFA/VFL team since 1987 where they kicked 25.14(164) vs Queensland in Brisbane.
Alistair Neville was named Frank Johnson Medallist as Victoria's best player. The Vics had stars all over the ground with Nick Sautner kicking 9 goals, Dolphin Justin Berry with 4. Captain James Byrne and Bendigo Bomber Simon Rosa were also in the Vics best but a fantastic team performance. Adam Hay won the Simpson Medal for WA's best player but this will be a game that WAFL will look back on and wonder what happened?
The VFL will look ahead to a big interleague game against the SANFL in Adelaide in 2008.
