1st Preliminary Final - Sandringham v Geelong
I've just got back from what was a very entertaining game of VFL footy played infront of one of the largest crowds I have seen (excluding the Grand Final) in some years. I would estimate about 5500 would have been at the ground. The Cats ran out winners 115 to 88, and will meet Sandy in what should be a great game at MC Labour Park next week. Food ran out around 3/4 time, and Geelong certainly do attract supporters come finals time. Hopefully the Grand Final will be played at Port, because the atmosphere was far better than that of Princes Park.

Certainly blessed with the weather but they'd have to be happy with the crowd. Loads of people there. But I don't want the Grand Final there. Unfortunate they ran out of VFL Records at least 45 minutes before the start of the game. The crowd probably doubled between then and the opening bounce so most of the crowd got a photocopy of team lists. They must have way, way underbudgeted their crowd numbers over the weekend to have that happen.

Several factors regarding the crowd... * No AFL up against it * Good weather * SUNDAY * 2 PM start The late start especially when you factor in supporters driving from Geelong. Looking forward to seeing how Geelong goes up against the Zebras, will Nicholson play on Nathan Ablett, who presented well in front of goals today.. and who will try and negate players like Ezra Poyas?

watched it on TV and it looked a great crowd. Geelong pull the support in. I remember they outnumbered Port Melbourne ten to one at the 2002 granny. If we can't 12,000 next Sunday we're in serious trouble my friends
* SUNDAY * 2 PM start
Yeah, exactly. Reckon they might learn that from today? Probably not. As for Geelong, yeah they draw a good crowd. Just one thing, if there were 5,500 there today, can we imagine DOUBLE that crowd at Port Melbourne? Thats the reason why the Grand Final can't be played at Port. It was crowded enough, comfortable without being overcrowded. Imagine double that trying to squeeze in. It would be a nightmare. Atmosphere it one thing, but being squished like a sardine and having kids unable to see the game or have a run around on the hill cos its too crowded wouldnt a good thing. Keep it at Optus or try Skilled Stadium.

If the GF was moved to Port Melbourne it would show that the VFL had conceded that they will only get 10,000 max. By keeping it at a bigger ground it shows that they are expecting a bigger crowd which adds respectability to the comp. Whether they get that crowd or not is another thing. I am tipping around 14-15,000 next week, Geelong are fired up after a year of dissapointment, they are really getting into the spirit of things down there at the moment.

hey, wouldn't it be good to get 18,000 or (dream of dreams) 20,000? Hopefully the media can give the VFL a big push (for a change) this week. It goes without saying that we, the ordinary fans, should turn out and take a few friends with us. Yes, 8000 people sees Port out, but I reckon one of my favourite days in footy was at the Port granny in 97, when Sandy beat Frankston. The big fella Andy Goodwin came out throwing punches at anyone who moved but Paul Dear wouldn't take his rubbish. The crowd just buzzed.

How many people noticed the scoreboard stuff up during the last quarter The scoreboard showed Williamstown 11-12-78 Geelong 15-12-202 It was corrected after next goal. I did get a photo of the mistake at the time it happened.

I think Slade is a good match-up for Poyas. He's quick, he's hard and he's good in the air. Callan could play on him too. I think you'll find with McCarthy coming back that Ablett will do a fair bit of work at the forward side stoppages. He might have more of a roaming role
