GEELONG'S VFL side is a work in progress, according to coach Dale Amos. But, it's a project he is excited about working on.

The Cats (1-4) travel to the Trevor Barker Oval tomorrow to take on the fifth-placed Sandringham and Amos said it would be another good challenge for the side's young players to come up against some quality St Kilda players in the Zebra line-up.

The Zebras team will contain the likes of Max Hudghton and Matt Maguire and former Geelong Falcons Jack Steven and Tom Simpkin.

The Cats lost by 10 goals to reigning premier North Ballarat last round but Amos said the signs were encouraging.

"With a young side, we just have to make sure that we try and reduce the amount of mistakes that we make in a game because North Ballarat made us pay dearly in that area last week," Amos said.

"We have to make sure we are more consistent over the whole game and don't fade in and out for periods, try and make sure our best and worst are not that far apart."

Young defender Tom Gillies has been rock solid in the early rounds and Amos said the club was pleased with how the draftees were developing. "Those boys are coming along nicely and playing some good footy," Amos said.

"Disappointed that we haven't won more games, but not with the way they are tracking. They are taking more responsibility in the side as well, so that's really encouraging."
