WILLIAMSTOWN’S unbeaten VFL run is over. The Seagulls lost by two points, 15.8 (98) to 14.16 (100) to North Ballarat in the highly anticipated round eight clash between the two VFL powerhouses at Burbank Oval on Sunday.
The Roosters, sitting second on the ladder, went into the final term with a five-point lead against the top-of-the-table Seagulls, on the back of six goals from Corey Jones and a competitive three quarters.
The lead kept changing and with 10 minutes to go it was all tied up at 97 points apiece. Seagull Patrick Rose had a left-foot snap on the run from 40 metres out, which just bounced across the face for a minor score drawing a roar from the home crowd.
But then it was the visitors’ turn; the Roosters kicked three minors on the trot to steal the lead but it was not over. Seagull David Stretton burst through the middle with the game on the line but his kick towards the forward 50m was touched off the boot and the Roosters were able to run out the clock and claim the points.
“It was always going to be an arm wrestle to see who could come up at the end,†Williamstown coach Brad Gotch said.
