THE VFL coaching merry-go-round has thrown up some surprises, with former Melbourne midfielder and Frankston coach Brett Lovett snaring the Sandringham coaching position.
He replaces his former Demons teammate Andy Lovell, who this week signed as a Gold Coast assistant. Lovett previously coached the Dolphins to finals in a stint from 2003-08, and was one of the most admired coaches in the VFL.
He has since been managing a nursery on the Mornington Peninsula, something he can continue as the Zebras' position is only part-time. Lovett is Sandringham's first unaligned coach since the Mark Williams three-peat premiership era. Lovett recently met Saints coach Ross Lyon but will not be a development coach at the Saints.
