THE AFL will push ahead with its proposed national champions league despite the SANFL fielding three of its bottom four teams.
West Adelaide (6th), North Adelaide (7th) and Port Adelaide (8th) may play the VFL and WAFL premiers and AFL team-in-waiting Greater Western Sydney after SA's top five clubs declined an invitation.
The AFL was officially notified yesterday and spokesman Patrick Keane said it would not derail plans for the knockout tournament - intended to showcase the best state league teams in the land.
"Our intention is to proceed,'' he said.
"A number of clubs have given reasons why they won't be involved and we've got to respect those reasons.
