FORMER AFL coach Gary Ayres has called for more random drug target testing within state leagues including the VFL.

The Port Melbourne premiership coach, who has helped produce several AFL recruits in recent seasons, said it had been a rare occurrence for his players to be target tested for illicit drugs.

He said he stressed to his part-time players to be aware of any banned substances.

AFL Victoria said it liaised regularly with ASADA to comply with its requirements - but Ayres feared some state league players could get away with taking illicit and banned substances because they were part-time.

THIRD VFL player is facing a lengthy suspension for violating the performance-enhancing drugs code.

The Herald Sun can reveal the player will front an AFL Victoria tribunal today, eight months after testing positive to a steroid contained in an energy drink.

The star midfielder, who is facing a two-year ban, told his club he took an energy drink at a party a few days before a match.

He was tested by Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority officials after the game, returning a positive sample.

It is believed he took the pre-workout drink Mesomorph, a powder mixed with water which boosts energy levels to "animal-like aggressions'' before partying with a group of friends.

It follows the 18-month ban slugged on Casey Scorpion Wade Lees for importing a fat-burner contaminated with traces of steroids and the nine-month penalty handed out to Frankston Dolphin Matt Clark.

FOOTBALL coaches generally don't like to look backwards but it's pertinent when it comes to Port Melbourne.

This time last year the Borough, then the reigning premiers, were in the throes of a mass exodus; 11 premiership players had departed. But it's a different story this time.

Sam Dwyer (Collingwood AFL), Stephen Brewer (Greenvale) and Adam Bentick (St Bernard's) have been the only senior departures amid several new signings, including a swag of players from the Oakleigh Chargers.

"The positive has been the recruiting," coach Gary Ayres said.

"We're very forward in that regard compared to this time last year. We've also decreased the injury list . . . there are limited numbers in the rehab room and we're a lot healthier than this time last year."

THE sight of Steve Brewer taking the ball at half back and giving it a mighty hoof with his left boot has delighted Port Melbourne supporters for six seasons.

Few players kicked it longer or stronger. There were days when you suspected he needed the all-clear from Tullamarine to launch his drop punts from the North Port Oval.

But Brewer has closed his worthy VFL career, heading to Greenvale in the Essendon District league.

"Their (Greenvale's) ground is 500m from the school I teach at,'' Brewer said this morning.

"They have been in contact with me for the last couple of years and I knew I'd go there at some stage, when I felt the time was right to leave the VFL. The time's right now.''

Port coach Gary Ayres said the 2011 premiership player made an important contribution to the Borough and could be proud of his achievements. He called him a "thorough professional''.

Brewer bounced around the VFL before consolidating a senior position at the Borough.

He fiddled away in the reserves at Box Hill for two seasons, gained senior opportunities at Casey Scorpions, then had a year at Williamstown.

Charlie McAdam signs at Sandringham Zebras

HE'S the son of former St Kilda and Brisbane star Gilbert, but Charlie McAdam has arrived at Sandringham intent on forging his own reputation in Victorian football.

The 22-year-old left-footer landed in Melbourne three weeks ago and phoned Zebras general manager John Mennie asking if he could train with the VFL club.

Sandy signed him after one session.

They did their home work, noting McAdam had played at two national Under 18 championships.

Family ties to Sandringham's AFL affiliate St Kilda tempted him to the Trevor Barker Oval.
