THE VFL season is only a pup, but it's not too early to say Port Melbourne has taken another resolute step forward under coach Gary Ayres.
Premierships? It is premature to venture there, but the Boroughs showed against their great rival the Northern Bullants on Saturday that they're very much a top-two contender.
Both teams entered the match unbeaten after three rounds, enough to attract a terrific crowd to the Cramer St ground.
But it was Port which came out of it 4-0 after an outstanding match in which the lead changed numerous times in the first half before the visitors pulled away in the last quarter for a 24 point-win.
