GEELONG will get the best indication of whether it is a VFL finals contender this season against Coburg today, according to coach Dale Amos.
The ninth-placed Cats host the seventh-placed Coburg at Skilled Stadium this morning as the curtain raiser to the AFL clash between Geelong and Melbourne.
Geelong has won its last three games to put itself into finals contention, but those have been against sides below it on the ladder.
The Richmond-aligned Tigers thrashed the Cats by 74 points at Coburg back in round two but Amos believes the side has improved considerably since then.
"We've spoken about how it (today's game) will be a gauge for how far we've come," Amos said.
"I think the guys are looking forward to challenging a side who did give us a bit of a hiding early in the season."
After today, Geelong takes on Casey (fourth) and Collingwood (fifth) in the last five rounds.
Coburg's side contains experienced AFL players such as Nathan Brown, Joel Bowden, Jordan McMahon and Graham Polak. Amos said lining up on those players would be great for his young players.
"It's nice to be able to test yourself against AFL players. They've had the chance to do it in a few games and this is another opportunity," Amos said.
The match starts at 10.40am.
