CARLTON development and Northern Bullants coach David Teague said the Bullants would welcome troubled defender Setanta O'hAilpin back to the club after he served any AFL-imposed suspension.

Teague, who described O'hAilpin as a "really nice guy", was shocked at Friday's footage that showed the Irishman kick teammate Cameron Cloke following a series of punches during an intra-club match.

"It's completely out of character for him," Teague told The Sunday Age. "Normally, he's one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet and one of the most dedicated blokes at training.

"I think all of the blokes at our club would definitely welcome him and would be excited to help him get back on the horse again."

However, Teague said he expected O'hAilpin to serve "a great deal of time" on the sidelines.

"I think it's gone to the AFL so he'll probably have to serve a suspension and that includes VFL matches so he mightn't play for even the whole season but hopefully that's not the case because he's a good footballer," he said. "I think he just had a moment … I was pretty shocked with it all, like anybody at the club."
