Noticed there are mostly Port supporters on this forum so just thought i would share this story from the 1930's.
My mum was born and raised in Oakleigh. She never cared for footy but one day when she was a girl, accompanied a friend to the local ground to watch Oakleigh play a team called Port Melbourne.
All was going well until caught up in the excitement, she made the fatal mistake of copying her friend and shouted 'Go Oakleigh'. With that an umbrella came crashing across her head from a lady behind her.
She never attended another game of footy, even when i played juniors.
I phoned her on Friday night at her nursing home in the country and told her i was going to watch Port play Footscray. She just laughed. She hadn't forgotten.
