COLLINGWOOD announced itself as a finals threat for the first time since entering the revamped VFL competition after throttling the Northern Bullants by 50 points at Visy Park yesterday.

Across town, it was the Chris Cain and Wayne Schultz show as Port Melbourne upstaged the much-improved Box Hill Hawks to win by 49 points at TEAC Oval.

But the Magpies — last year tagged as a "developing club" — have proved they are after much more than developing their own AFL players after dismantling the second-placed Bullants, affiliated to arch-rival Carlton.

Collingwood followed Geelong's lead at the start of the 2008 season to field its own VFL team instead of being aligned to Williamstown.

Coach Gavin Brown has insisted the move would take time before results could be produced at VFL level.
