The Werribee Football Club is pleased to announce that 1993 Werribee Premiership player John Lamont has signed on as Senior Coach of the club for the next two years.
For the last seven seasons John has been a Development Coach at the North Melbourne Football Club (Werribee’s AFL Affiliate) and for the past three years, part of John’s role was working directly with the Werribee coaching staff, especially on match days.
Originally from Benalla, John played under 19’s and reserves with Collingwood, played two years at Werribee, then was captain coach of Ringwood in the Eastern Football League.
John coached the Oakleigh Chargers (1998-2002) (Eastern Rangers (2003-2006) in the TAC Cup before joining the Kangaroos in 2007.
John replaces Scott West who will be pursuing other football opportunities.
Werribee CEO Mark Penalunasaid “The club sincerely thanks Scott West for his contribution to our club over the last two years, and we wish him well for his football future.
The club is thrilled to have John Lamont taking over the senior coaching role. 20 years after playing in our only senior premiership, it seems fitting to have John back at Avalon Airport Oval. We have seen how astute a football person he is, especially over the past three years. We already knew his qualities as a person.”
Lamont is equally pleased “I am excited. I am looking forward to the opportunity and I feel privileged to get the chance. I see myself as a club coach and I will involve everyone, all our stakeholders, in achieving that. This club has had a huge impact on my life. I got to play in a premiership team and got to know Donald McDonald.
After 1993 I commenced coaching and Donald and I continued to cross paths in our coaching, for instance we completed our Level Three coaching accreditation together, and a few years after that, he was instrumental in getting me to North Melbourne, where I had seven wonderful years.
During those years I always kept an eye on the ‘boys from Chirnside Park’, but the last three have been working closely with Werribee, where I have seen firsthand where this club is heading, and I am glad to be a part of a group of people looking to be driving positive outcomes for the club.”
