THE Bendigo Gold slumped to a 129-point defeat at the hands of the Casey Scorpions on Saturday.

The Melbourne-aligned Scorpions tore the Gold apart, winning 23.11 (149) to 2.8 (20)

“It was a combination of a young, inexperienced group being outmuscled and outplayed mixed with some genuine fatigue,’’ Bendigo Gold coach Aussie Jones said.

“Even some of our more experienced players are starting to feel the bite of 17 or 18 VFL games compared to a season at local level.”

Casey somewhat arrogantly won the toss and kicked into a five-goal breeze.

It mattered little as the Scorpions kicked five goals to one.

THE future of the Bendigo Gold Football Club looks brighter just one day into its survival campaign.

The Gold announced on Monday that the club needed 500 new members, a marked lift in sponsorship and access to a facility capable of running as a commercial venture to ensure its survival.

In developments yesterday:

n the City Of Greater Bendigo confirmed its support for Gold, with the Epsom-Huntly Recreation Reserve social rooms a possible facility for the club;

- a Bendigo Advertiser poll attracted 448 votes, 63.7 per cent in favour of Gold;

- Gold coach Aussie Jones reaffirmed his commitment to the club; and

- Gold skipper Steven Stroobants detailed how important the Gold pathway was for young footballers.

Bendigo Gold chairman Tim Dickson was elated with the response yesterday, but warned the club’s battle was a marathon, not a sprint.

In a VFL season that has offered few chances for an upset win, there was a sense of a golden opportunity missed by Bendigo in a 40-point loss to Frankston at the QEO on Saturday.

The Gold’s players and coaching staff were pleased with a competitive effort, but critical mistakes left them wondering what might have been in the 9.12 (66) to 14.22 (106) defeat.

Take nothing away from the Dolphins, which deserved its fourth win of the season, and will rightly believe they should have iced the game earlier than the fourth quarter with better accuracy in front of goals.

BENDIGO Football Club captain Steven Stroobants says the Gold must stick together after a record loss at Williamstown on Saturday.

The Seagulls handed Bendigo its biggest-ever VFL defeat of 176-points at Burbank Oval.

Coach Aussie Jones expected the match to be Bendigo’s biggest challenge of the season so far and, unfortunately for the Gold, he was right, as they went down 30.27 (207) to 5.1 (31).

Williamstown set the tone by drilling seven goals to one in the opening term and didn’t let up in the second.

BENDIGO Gold coach Aussie Jones reckons his young team could upset Sandringham at the QEO today.

The Gold has picked arguably its strongest side, while Sandringham is below full-strength.

“There’s some talent there, but I reckon there’s a sneaky chance this week,” Jones said.

Among the outs for the round six clash is Zebras captain Marcus Marigliani, who played for the VFL state team last weekend.

Sandringham will make at least six changes from its last game, although that’s made it tougher for Jones to do his homework on the Zebras – who are aligned with his former AFL club, St Kilda.

THE Bendigo Gold will today unveil one of their top recruits for the first time when Shannen Lange lines up against the Box Hill Hawks at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Lange joined the Gold in January, excited by the challenge of playing with the stand-alone VFL club, but also to keep his AFL dream alive.

Lange finished runner-up last year in the best and fairest for TAC Cup club Gippsland Power, but was overlooked at the AFL national draft.

A hamstring injury has delayed Lange’s start to the season, but he has been picked today to take on the Hawks in round five.

Andrew Krakeour, Darren Jolly and Alan Didak were Collingwood's best players as the Pies scored a big win over the Bendigo Gold at the QEO earlier tonight.

The Gold challenged the Magpies early, but the visitors had too much class in a 116-point victory.

Final scores: Bendigo 9.6 (60) defeated by Collingwood 25.26 (176).

Luke Ball made a welcome return to footy for the first time in more than a year for Collingwood and appeared to get through the match unscathed.

THE Bendigo Gold are tonight preparing for a VFL clash at the Queen Elizabeth Oval against Collingwood that can be best described as a battle of David v Goliath.

Tonight’s game pits the minnows of the VFL, the Gold, against the biggest sporting club in the land, the Magpies.

While the Gold are in their first season as a stand-alone club in the VFL and fighting for respect – both from their opposition and the Bendigo community – Collingwood is not only a power of the football world, but a brand that is the Australian equivalent of English soccer’s Manchester United and the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.
