A DOMINANT performance by North Melbourne midfielder Liam Anthony has given VFL affiliate North Ballarat its second successive victory of the season, defeating Northern Blues by 14 points today.

Anthony, who collected 35 possessions and laid seven tackles, was the unrelenting force that gave the Roosters its fourth victory of the year at a rain-sodden Eureka Stadium.

Kangaroos livewire Cruize Garlett (32 touches) pushed his claims for a senior recall while the wintry conditions didn’t favour forward Aaron Edwards (two goals).

Roosters journeyman Myles Sewell preferred to acknowledge coach Gerald FitzGerald rather than Hawthorn premiership star and brother Brad for his meteoric rise in becoming a 100-game VFL veteran.

“He (Brad) hasn’t played a great deal to be honest. He has been a valuable sounding board when I want it, but Fitzy (Gerald FitzGerald) has probably played a bigger role in my development,” the 2009 Liston Trophy winner said.

“The win was a great way to celebrate a great day.”

GWS overlooked Sewell in the 2010 preseason draft despite the 24-year-old being touted as a likely mature-aged pick.

Carlton midfielder Ed Curnow was pivotal in the Northern Blues’ recharge, amassing 33 disposals.

The former Box Hill tough nut struggled to carry the team’s workload as players like Bret Thornton (three goals, eight possessions) faded.

Youngster Kane Lucas fizzled with 12 touches as ex-Hawk Carl Peterson had little impact.

St Kilda utility Farren Ray hobbled off the field with a shin injury in Sandringham’s 79-point defeat to Werribee before returning just after halftime.

The Tigers saluted its fifth consecutive win in the 10.7 (67) to 6.5 (41) encounter.

Williamstown salvaged a draw against a much-improved Frankston after trailing by 41 points during the first quarter.

The Dolphins have fallen agonisingly short against the competition’s juggernauts including its six-point loss to the Zebras last week.
