WAFL v SANFL State Game

STATE FOOTY IS BACK AS WAFL TAKE ON SANFL IN PERTH
By Michael Robinson (VFLfooty.com)

This Saturday WAFL play SANFL in the 2009 State Game at Medibank Stadium in Perth (starting at 2:40pm Melbourne Time) for the Haydn Bunton Cup. Former Adelaide Crow Darel Hart will once again coach the SANFL team and Former Fremantle and Sydney player Scott Watters will co! ach the WAFL team for the first time.

The SANFL will go in as favourites but hopefully playing in the front of the home crowd will lift the WAFL and make it a good contest.

This is the 91st meeting between the two leagues and the record stands at 45 wins each. The SANFL have a great recent record against the WAFL winning their last 5 meetings. In their last meeting in 2006 under the Adelaide Oval lights the SANFL won by 17 points 14-14(98) to 12-9(81) in a very tight contest when the SANFL team only broke away in the final quarter to get the win. The WAFL’s last win against the SANFL was at Football Park (now AAMI Stadium) back in 1994.

There are 11 Ex VFL Players that will be playing in this match (5 for WAFL and 6 for SANFL).

WAFL

Perth - Ross Young (Ex Northern Bullants)
Robert Young (Ex Coburg Tigers)!
Swan Districts - Brett Robinson (Ex Werribee)
Peel Thunder - Si mon Rosa (Ex Bendigo Bombers)
Danny Chartes (Ex Bendigo Bombers)
SANFL
Glenelg - Danny Meyer (Ex Coburg Tigers)
North Adelaide - James Allan (Ex Werribee)
Clint Alleway (Ex Box Hill Hawks)
Norwood - Brett Zorzi (Ex Northern Bullants)
Port Adelaide Magpies - Jeremy Clayton (Ex North Ballarat/Port Melbourne)
West Adelaide - Ryan Ferguson (Ex Frankston/Sandringham)

These games are always great as there is plenty of passion and this game should be no different. There will be no doubt we here in Victoria will be looking at this result with interest ahead of the VFL’s game against the WAFL in Perth in 2010.

Port digs deep

Patrick Hassett gets chased down by Frankston's James Magner.JASON EDWARDS S47CK999

IT was ladies day at Port Melbourne on Saturday and the champers flowed at a marquee set up around from the small grandstand.

To judge from the anxious expression he carried in the first quarter, Boroughs coach Gary Ayres would have liked to inject a bit of fizz into his team as it lagged behind Frankston.

Despite being undermanned, the Dolphins fired off the first five goals of the match, leaving Port to fumble around like a man who’d misplaced his glasses.

But, good side that is, Port Melbourne clawed its way back and kicked six goals to none in the final term to win by 21 points and go 4-1 after six rounds.

No sooner had Ayres stepped down from the coaches box than he put his thoughts on Port’s next assignment. He called it a blockbuster: Williamstown at Point Gellibrand.

The Seagulls are still shirty about last year’s preliminary final, when the Boroughs came from four goals down at half time to charge into the grand final.
