THE AFL has failed in its bid to take over much of the running of the Victorian Football League.

At the VFL's annual general meeting last night, the AFL's push for increased control of the state league — including the composition of the board — was voted down.

VFL advocate Phil Cleary said last night he was pleased with the result.
