NO SOONER had South Australia set records in flooring Victoria at Adelaide Oval yesterday than it raised its arms to claim its state league was the best outside the AFL.

The Croweaters actually started squawking after kicking a 9.2 to 0.2 second term, setting up a surprisingly easy 65-point win — their fourth in five of these games between the SANFL and VFL since 1999.

It was a record margin and record score in all 18 state league games involving the SANFL, VFL and WAFL since a forced revamp of interstate football in 1991, and SA believes it tells tomorrow\'s hopefuls where to come if they want to resurrect their chances of an AFL career.

But the contest didn\'t quite end with the final siren as a gracious Victorian coach Gerard FitzGerald — who emphasised how much SA deserved its win — said the game highlighted the differences between the leagues; between older, more mature players, and those in the VFL, where there were more kids on the horizon.

PORT Melbourne enters the break for the VFL-SANFL state game in robust shape after bringing down the second-placed Casey Scorpions at TEAC Oval on Saturday.

Led by key forward Adrian Bonaddio\'s five goals and constant run from defenders Steve Brewer and Sam Pleming, the Boroughs earned a 30-point victory.

It was their fifth win this season, good enough for fourth on the ladder.

It wasn\'t the greatest game ever seen at the Port Melbourne ground, and the umpires seemed to make as many blunders as the players, but the home team persisted, led at every change and saw off a Casey rally in the last quarter.

SANDRINGHAM go into next week\'s representative-match break in third place, having climbed two rungs on the VFL ladder with yesterday\'s 45-point defeat of the Northern Bullants at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

The Bullants led at the first change after a scrappy opening stanza, with both teams turning the ball over by hand in close quarters. But the Zebras emerged as a much more polished outfit after quarter-time with Ezra Poyas, Chris Johnson and Lynden Dunn providing plenty of run off half-back, delivering repeatedly to Melbourne gun Colin Sylvia, who was a busy small forward.

Goal machine Nick Sautner kicked seven but was hardly in sparkling form with young defender Mark Austin\'s undisciplined play gifting him three goals from 50-metre penalties.
