Body:
Rusty round one effort from the Bullants, but nonetheless a winning start to the 2006 season.
After a strong start from Digby Morrell and Carlton recruit Josh Kennedy, the Bullants forward line struggled. Morrell moved up the ground as light rain made conditions difficult for marking in the second-half.
Sloppy supply and relentless flooding ensured that the Tigers undersized backline wasn't routed after a three-goal first quarter burst from Morrell. The determined Tigers rebounded well of the Bullants skill errors and but for poor goal-kicking they could have given the Bullants a real fright.
Playing as a follower cum ruckman, Ian Prendergast was best afield for the Bullants with Kennedy, Bannister and Morrell not far away. Ross Young's last quarter running goal, the Bullants last for the game, was the highlight of an unspectactular win by the Bullants.
Under Andy Collins, Coburg are likely to improve as the season goes on.
The Bullants have a round two bye while Coburg travel to Geelong in what looks like a winnable game for the Tigers.
Reserves
After a flat first-half effort from the Bullants ,they outscored the Tigers 8.11 to 5.2 to win, 12.17.89 to 12.9.81.
Fielding seven Carlton players [2 senior list, 5 rookies] the Bullants struggled early as Coburg looked the better side. The move of Michael Hooper into the ruck after half-time sparked the Bullants into action.
Until injured late into the last term, David James had a strong second-half finishing with five goals, [four after half-time]. Carlton rookie, Ryan Jackson was best for the Bullants with Sam Higgs another valuable contributor.
