IT had the appearance of boys against men.

The Casey Scorpions suffered a 103-point hiding at the hands of Sandringham in their VFL opener at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

To make matters worse, it was the Zebras with whom the Scorpions had swapped AFL partners, as Sandringham finds itself married to St Kilda.

HE’S had to come to grips with new players in a new team in a new league with a new affiliation.

So when coach Peter German was asked about his expectations for his Casey Scorpions in 2009, the answer was hardly a surprise.

“None. We’d love to play in finals, but with the new alignment with Melbourne and so many new players we don’t know where we stand in the competition at the moment and I don’t think a lot of clubs do either,” German said.

“Round 10 we might sit down and look at it and say ok, we’ve just about played everyone and we’ve seen what’s gone on in the competition ... but at the moment, we don’t know ourselves yet, so it’s hard to really set goals.”

FORMER Dandenong star Andrew Lacko has joined the Casey Scorpions as an assistant coach.

The dual Dandy best and fairest played for the club briefly in its Springvale days, after the Redlegs were wound up at the end of the 1994 season.

He later coached and played in the Eastern league.

A classy centreman, Lacko covered a lot of ground during his playing days. But he will be doing less miles in his coaching role: he lives not far from the Casey Fields ground.

Meanwhile the Scorpions have signed leading VAFA forward Matt Moore.

CASEY Scorpions football manager Craig Lees is tipping big things for his club’s new AFL relationship with Melbourne on the eve of the 2009 VFL season.

Lees praised Demons officials’ approachability after their intra-club match on Saturday and expects the alignment to be more successful than the Scorpions’ eight-year partnership with St Kilda.

CASEY Scorpions general manager Brian Woodman is hailing the club’s 2009 VFL draw as ‘one of its best’.

The Scorpions face their former St Kilda teammates first up next year when they travel to Trevor Barker Oval to take on Sandringham on 12 April.

The two VFL clubs swapped AFL affiliates this year, with Casey and Melbourne joining forces.

Woodman was thrilled with the club’s 11 Sunday games, including seven at Casey Fields, and the better link between its senior and reserves matches.

“We specifically wanted more Sunday games to get the local football crowd to come and watch us,” he said.

The Casey Scorpions are pleased to announce Peter German as their senior Coach for 2009. German played 185 games for the Kangaroos between 1984 and 1994 in a distinguished career.

Peter began his coaching career at Burnie in Tasmania in 1995. Peter is a vastly experienced senior coach spending the last two years as an assistant coach at Fremantle under Chris Connolly and Mark Harvey. Prior to his time at Fremantle Peter led the Subiaco Football Club to the minor premiership in each of his four years at the helm, achieving premiership success in 2004 and 2006, and runners-up in 2003. During his years at Subiaco his winning ratio was 80 percent, and across his coaching career has a winning ratio of 72 percent.

He was coach of the Peel Thunder Football Club in 2002, Assistant Coach at West Coast 2000 and 2001, Assistant Coach/Reserves Coach at the Hawthorn Football Club in 1998 and 1999, and Senior Coach of the Burnie Dockers Football Club in the Tasmanian Football League from 1995 and 1997 (Runners-up in 1996 and 1997).

IF THE first two games of the VFL finals series are anything to go by, VFL fans are in for a nail-biting month, with Casey and Frankston surviving elimination finals with narrow victories yesterday.

At Casey Fields, the Scorpions were met by a fired-up eighth-placed Bullants, who were determined to extend their finals push and avenge an embarrassing 118-point defeat in round six.

Playing coach David Teague and captain Josh Vansittart led their side by example, Teague with three goals and some inspirational acts, and Vansittart composed as usual in defence. But Casey captain Kyle Matthews and onballer David Armitage, who proved equally as damaging, matched the Bullants duo for both tenacity and touch.

Although Casey controlled much of the play, it struggled to make use of its superior possession, with poor delivery to key forwards Jarryd Allen and Michael Rix proving costly at times. Ruckman Michael Gardiner was impressive at the stoppages and also around the ground, finding space and providing a competitive marking target.

CASEY Scorpions stepped out of one top-eight logjam and into another with a tenacious 31-point win against arch-rival Sandringham at Casey Fields yesterday. The Scorpions now join North Ballarat and Port Melbourne on equal points locked for second place.

Only percentage separated third-placed Sandringham and fourth-placed Casey before yesterday\'s VFL match of the round, and for three quarters little separated the two clubs on the field.

With Sandringham goal-machine Nick Sautner still sidelined with injury and St Kilda half-forward Charlie Gardiner a late call-up to the senior side only hours before the bounce of the ball, the game looked likely to boil down to a battle of the back lines. Casey\'s young defence, headed by Alex Silvagni and James Wall, was ranked No. 1 in the VFL before yesterday\'s game, having conceded only 741 points during the first nine rounds.
