Dolphins smashed by Seagulls

It was a warm day at Williamstown and the Dolphins were hoping to get off to a good start but lead by just 2 points at quarter time after kicking an inaccurate 2.7 in the 1st quarter.

From the start of the 2nd Quarter the Seagulls started to dominate with Andrew Williams dominating up forward with 4 goals and the Seagulls jumped out to a 29 point half time. Aaron Murray limped with a serious ankle injury and Matthew Burns did not play after half time with a concussion which left the Dolphins with 2 on the bench for the 2nd half.

This continued in the 3rd Quarter as the Seagulls piled on another 6 goals to the Dolphins 2 to lead by 52 points at the final change.

Despite trying hard in the final quarter the Dolphins only manged 3.5 to the Seagulls 5.6 as Williamstown ran out comfortable 65 point winners.

THE Dolphins had a dip, but reigning premiers Sandringham refused to buckle.

After quelling Frankston's final quarter tilt, Sandy steadied to record a 24-point win in front of a good crowd at Frankston.

Bolstered by a bunch of Melbourne-listed players, the Zebras had a bit too much polish for the never-say-die Dolphins.   It was Sandringham's fifth straight win.

Frankston coach Brett Lovett said the Dolphins were lively but lacked a knockout punch.

``We're certainly not into good efforts any more down here,'' he said.   ``I thought we had our opportunities throughout the day but just failed to hurt them when we were going forward, particularly in the second quarter when I felt we had control of the play and we weren't able to hit targets across half forward or finish off with goals.''

Apart from the opening quarter when Frankston got off to a flier when Aaron Murray booted three goals in the opening 10 minutes, none of the Dolphins' ``bigs'' fired.

Instead, if was left to livewires Justin Berry and Ricky Morris to kick a winning score. They were gallant, but they needed support.

Sandy too good for Dolphins

A good crowd came to Frankston Park to see the Battle of the Bayside. Sandy got off to a good start controlling the game and kicking 6 first quarter goals and despite the efforts of Aaron Murray kicking 3 golas himself, the Zebra took a 20 point lead into quarter time.

The Dolphins fought back in the second quarter kicking the 1st 3 goals to get within 2 points until the Zebras added 2 themselves to lead by 16 points at half time.

Frankston tried hard to stay with Zebras in the 3rd quarter but again a couple of late Zebra goals gave Sandy a 26 point lead at the final change.

Again Frankston came out and kicked the 1st 2 goals of the final quarter to get within 2 goals but goals to former Dolphin Ryan Ferguson and Peter Summers sealed a 4 goal win for the Zebras.

Dolphins run all over Devils

Despite flight delays and a rush to get to the ground, Frankston have beaten Tasmania by 52 points in the Alec Campbell Cup game at Aurora Stadium in Launceston.

It was a cool but clear night with Frankston getting off to a good start against the breeze with goals to Matthew Burns and Justin Berry got the Dolphins a handy 9 point quarter time lead.

Frankston used the wind to their advantage in the second quarter as they piled on 5 goals to lead by 39 points shortly before the break. Tassie then had their best period of the game kicking three unanswered goals to get within 21 points at half time.

After half time the Dolphins midfield continued to dominate as Frankston added another 4 goals to 2 to lead by 34 points going into the final change.

In the final quarter the Dolphins finished the domination with 4 goals to Tasmania's 1 to win the game by 52 points.

Justin Berry won the Frank McDonald Medal for Frankston's best player. Marcus Marigliani, Sam Carpenter and Nick Benbow were among Frankston's best but it was a great team performance.

"It's always tough to come down here and win," Frankston coach Brett Lovett said.

"This was the best four quarters we've played all year, our pressure was great, and I couldn't be more proud of the boys."

Second quarter lapse costs Dolphins

From Frankston Independent

It was an overcast day at Geelong as the Dolphins were looking for their first win at Skilled Stadium. Rain started to fall about an hour before the game and continued throughout(not good for the game, but good for the farmers).

It was a arm wrestle in the first quarter as both defences got on top and both teams struggled to get the ball close to goal. Finally 15 minutes into the 1st quarter Dale Whelan kicked the first goal of the game this was followed up by a goal by Marcus Marigliani to give the Dolphins a 9 point quarter time lead.

Leigh Tudor must have given the Geelong players a rev up quarter time as the Cats came out firing kicking 6 goals in the first 10 minutes to break the game open. The Dolphins didn't have the answer against the Geelong midfield of Nathan Djerrkura, Tim Callan and Kane Tenace. By half time an 8 goal to 1 quarter gave the Cats a 33 point lead.

As the 3rd quarter got underway it went pretty similar to first quarter the ball was kicked from end to end with only 1 goal to each team with Cats looking like that had a match winning lead of 32 points at the final change.
