Frankston may fold as AFL funds dry up

THE financially stricken Frankston Football Club is in danger of folding amid increasing uncertainty surrounding the AFL's budget for AFL Victoria in 2010 and beyond.

The Dolphins, who receive $140,000 annually from AFL Victoria, are not guaranteed the same amount next season and say they can't foresee their future beyond this season.

Frankston coach Shannon Grant is expecting good things from recruit Shane McDonald this season. From Bonbeach, where he was a best and fairest and Mornington Peninsula league team-of-the-year selection, McDonald showed some sparkle for Collingwood’s VFL team last season.

Frankston caused a boilover in the second half of Round 15 today, defeating the previously red-hot Port Melbourne by 26 points in front of a big home crowd at Frankston Oval to keep their finals hopes alive.

Going in against the form team of the competition, the Dolphins needed to come out firing and from the opening bounce it was clear they were intent on doing just that - looking like a team with a point to prove, attacking the ball harder than their opposition as they dominated all over the ground.

But for all their good work, it looked like they would be unable to take advantage of the ascendancy as they wasted a series of gettable chances to put on four behinds before the first goal came through Aaron Murray.

FRANKSTON proved it is still a force to be reckoned with this season, upsetting highly fancied Port Melbourne by 26 points at Frankston Oval yesterday, in a clash of the VFL's stand-alone teams.

Having had agonising losses to premiership contenders Williamstown and Werribee in recent weeks, Frankston coach Brett Lovett was hellbent on beating Port, which would have taken top spot along with premiership favouritism with a win yesterday. Frankston won 13.14 (92) to 9.12 (66).

After a terrific first quarter, a trademark of the Dolphins' play this season, Frankston held a 30-point lead at the first change, an advantage that would ultimately prove beyond Port Melbourne's reach.

Fire destroys historic footy grandstand

Police and firefighters are investigating a multi-million dollar fire that destroyed the historic Frankston Oval football grandstand and caused several million dollars in damage to what is set to be the new St Kilda AFL club base.

Members of the Victorian Football League club, known as the Dolphins, say they are devastated at the loss of what they call an "icon".

Bryan Mace, after whom the grandstand was named, said he was "pretty upset" after visiting the scene this morning.

Built in the 1930s, the grandstand is now crumpled and completely destroyed, the ruins still smouldering.

Frankston Football Club president Jay McGrath said the club would now consider whether to replace the building.

"What we need to do is work out exactly what we can do. We need to sit down with AFL Victoria and the local council to see what we can do."
