What would you expect from a dying comp? Why would any major company want to waste money on this comp with possibe hard times around the corner when even a minor sponsership at AFL level gets some sort of National coverage? Even the week before the crowd at Willy was very ordinary considering the Seagulls were playing"the mighty magpies "(sic) who are supposed to have this mammoth support and were playing on a perfect day at Willy. I drove past my local team playing last sat and there were far more people at that game than at Willy or Sandy. No publicity to speak of for the VFL and the negative of being seen as the AFL magoos is really starting to bite. The GF at Telstra is looking like a giant mistake. Marketing wise the current VFL is turning into the VFA of the pre TV days of the 1950s. Three things saved the VFA from oblivion from the early 1960s - 16 men a side, exclusive Sunday games ,Sunday TV and no clearence agreement with the VFL so some good VFL players were avaiable to be recruited. None of this can now happen so the now VFL is just a pale and second rate comp in the eyes of the Victorian Football public and they just aint buying it..
