Devils' pact grows shaky

From The Mercury
Reported by Brett Stubbs

FOR the first time since agreeing to the "semi-marriage", AFL Tasmania is questioning the future of its controversial partial alignment with AFL club the Kangaroos.

As a stand-alone VFL club, the Devils played five seasons for a 46 per cent winning return, and made the finals from 2003-05.

However, since entering the alignment, the Devils have won just eight of 25 games at 32 per cent, missed last year's finals, and are currently sitting at the bottom of the VFL ladder.

Asked if the VFL continued on its present format next season -- subject to the AFL's review of the second-tier competition -- whether the Devils would still be partially aligned, AFL Tasmania general manger Scott Wade said: "Good question, and that is certainly something we need to consider as part of this whole process.

"The sole reason we have tried it and are trying it is to win this competition (because) you need access to AFL players or you need to spend a significant amount of money on recruiting players to Tasmania -- money we haven't got.

Vics pick Rosa, Cloke

From Bendigo Advertiser

METRICON Bendigo Bombers captain Simon Rosa and key recruit Jason Cloke have been selected in the Victorian Football League's squad to tackle Western Australia this Saturday.

Rosa and Cloke were yesterday named in the final squad of 25 to take on WA at Port Melbourne.

A first-year captain of the Bombers, Rosa has played 94 matches in the VFL.

He moved from Warrack Eagles to play for the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup under-18s competition before kicking on to play with Carlton `twos' in the VFL before returning to the red and black.

A skilful midfielder or on-ball player, Rosa is one of five VFL captains in this year's line-up.

Delisted by Collingwood at the end of last season, Cloke was quickly sought by Bombers' coach Matthew Knights.

A defender throughout most of his career with the Magpies, Cloke has played predominantly on a wing for Bendigo this season.

Victoria's final team of 22, and three emergencies, will be named tomorrow night.

Daniel Bandy and Jarrod Schofield failed fitness tests at Fremantle Oval last night and will not play in the state game on Saturday.

With that news the WAFL have now named their final squad of 23 that will travel to Melbourne on Friday after a final training session at Subiaco Oval tomorrow night.

From West Australian
Reported by Ross Lewis

WA coach Ashley Prescott believes Daniel Bandy and Jarrad Schofield deserve the opportunity to play in Saturday’s clash with Victoria even though both have missed matches in the lead-up due to injury.

Schofield has not played for WAFL club Subiaco since April 28 because of an ankle complaint while hamstring soreness has forced Bandy to be overlooked for Claremont’s past two league matches.

However, both veterans were retained in the Black Swans’ 29-man squad announced yesterday and were considered strong chances of making the 23-man touring party that leaves Perth on Friday.

Prescott said the experience of 32-year-old Schofield and Bandy, 31, was invaluable to a WA team that would face a VFL combined side stacked with former AFL squad members and strong-bodied talent.

The WAFL have named their 25 man squad for the game against the VFL at TEAC Oval on Saturday. There are 3 AFL Rookies in the squad as well as 11 players that played against SANFL in Adelaide last year.

Shane Woewodin will lead the WAFL side for the 1st time.

The WA Side is coached by former Richmond and Fremantle footballer Ashley Prescott. His assistants coaches are Simon Eastaugh, Todd Curley and Chris Waterman. Former Port Melbourne coach David Dunbar has been working as a consultant to the team in the lead up to this game.

Here is the squad of 25 (Players that played last year in BOLD, AFL Rookies in Italic)

CLAREMONT- Michael Warren, Jaxon Crabb, Ben Colreavy, Daniel Bandy, Anthony Jones, Chad Jones

WA racing to claim big State scalp

From WAFL Website

HEADED by a Brownlow medallist, two Sandover medallists and a bevy of players with AFL experience, the Carlton Draught WA State side is setting its sights on creating more winning WA State football history.

Shane Woewodin captains the Black Swans and will have Allistair Pickett (2002 and 2004 Sandover medallist) and Jaxon Crabb (2005) alongside him in the middle of the ground when the WA side runs out onto TEAC Oval.
While wins against Queensland, not a renowned Australian Rules State, came easily to WA in some of their most recent State encounters in 2002 and 2005, wins against more powerhouse States Victoria and South Australia have been harder to come by.

WA's last win against either Victoria or South Australia came back in 1994 when a WA side coached by Gerard Neesham beat the South Australians at Football Park by 14 points.

The last time the WAFL beat the VFA/VFL was in 1988.

The WA coaching hierarchy all know what it takes to prepare and play football at the highest level. Coach Ashley Prescott and his assistants Simon Eastaugh, Todd Curley and Chris Waterman all played AFL football.

Victorian State Squad

The TRUenergy Victorian Football League has announced its squad of 25 players to represent the Big V against Western Australia on Saturday at Port Melbourne’s TEAC Oval.

A team of 22 players and three emergencies and the captain and vice-captain will be named on Thursday night.

The team consists of:

• 5 VFL Captains
• 10 players 23 years or under
• 4 players over 27 years, the oldest 29 years
• 10 players who have played AFL
• 18 players who have not represented Victoria before
• 3 players from the 2005 team Vs SA
• 4 players who have represented Victoria at state level (7) in total
• Average age of team: 24 years.

Three-time TRUenergy VFL premiers Sandringham have the most representatives with six.

Victoria will be coached by Mark Williams (Sandringham) and assistant coach is Simon Atkins (Werribee).

VFL General Manager Martin Stillman said a number of players were not selected due to clouds over their fitness. Phil Read (Geelong) was not available for selection due to personal reasons.

"We have picked a balanced squad that is fit and in form and a good blend of youth and experience," Stillman said. "It is fantastic that 18 of the 25 are in line to represent Victoria for the first time. We believe the selected players will represent the Big V with passion and pride on Saturday.’’
