Seven to cover VFL next year

Channel 7 is set to cover the Victorian Football League next season in a move that could boost the network's chances of broadcasting the WAFL.

No deal has been signed between the network and the VFL but negotiations are understood to be significantly advanced.

The VFL's move to Channel 7 would mirror the arrangements in South Australia where the network has returned strong ratings in the first year of its SANFL coverage.

The inaugural match between Port Adelaide and new team Adelaide drew a peak of 81,000 viewers on 7mate - an audience larger than an AFL match broadcast into Adelaide that weekend

The WA Football Commission has identified Channel 7 as its preferred broadcast partner for the next three years and is attempting to find sponsors to underwrite the coverage.

The Victorian development, coming so soon after the SANFL success story, is likely to bolster the commission's bid to find sponsors.

Seven West Media, which operates Channel 7 and publishes _The West Australian _, was confident that progress was being made by the commission.

"I am confident that we have made substantial progress in finding support in the corporate market," Channel 7 managing director Mario D'Orazio said.

"We are confident that the football commission will eventually find the necessary support."

D'Orazio's confidence was matched by WAFC chief operating officer Nick Sautner, who has been charged with establishing a new broadcast deal.

"We are working in collaboration with Seven and continue to put proposals forward," Sautner said.

Dogs face Port for Grand Final berth

Footscray will face Port Melbourne for a spot in the Peter Jackson VFL Grand Final after the minor premiers comprehensively defeated Sandringham by 47 points at North Port Oval on Saturday.

The Bulldogs relished a week’s rest following a tough Qualifying Final win over rival Williamstown and will have some additional players to choose from after the Western Bulldogs 2014 campaign ended last week.

Fresh from a third place finish in the JJ Liston Medal, big man Tom Campbell looks a likely inclusion along with Tom Young and Mark Austin who are both available and firmly in the selection mix.

The last time the two sides met, Footscray were too good in a scrappy, wet affair and first year player Mitch Honeychurch dominated with a 25 possessions, five goal display in the 36 point win.

Footscray has been the in-form team of the competition winning 13 of the past 14 encounters — their only loss in that period at the hands of Box Hill who will play off in the other Preliminary Final this weekend.

Woodward, who played 13 regular season games for Box Hill, polled 20 votes to pip North Melbourne and North Ballarat ballwinner Liam Anthony (17).

Woodward polled in nine matches and was named best on ground four times, averaging 23 disposals and six tackles during the regular season.

His form warranted his AFL debut in Round 18.

The trophy is a just reward for the 21-year-old, whose career has been plagued by injuries including two knee reconstructions.

Woodward finds himself in strong company, with teammate and Hawks premiership captain Sam Mitchell a former winner, also with Box Hill, in 2002.
