Port Melbourne is expected to churn out more mature-age recruits in the lead-up to this year's AFL draft with midfielder Chris Cain already being linked to Fremantle, which is renowned for picking up late bloomers.
Heading into a semi-final against arch-rival Williamstown at North Port Oval on Saturday, Cain, who has generally spent most of his eight seasons at Port as a half-forward flanker, believes a move to the midfield has paid dividends this season.
"I've been able to play a bit more in the midfield and that's probably helped me go forward and back instead of just playing forward, over the last few years,'' Cain said. ''Some of our better players going down in the midfield has given me an opportunity.

ABC local radio Ballarat this morning announced that North Ballarat will not be fielding a DL side next year. Fitzy said it was unsustainable, and that players not required for the Roosters could play in their local teams. No mention in Ballarat Courier.
No mention of this was made during the "Inside Mail" program on 3RBA 102.3, by announcer Paul Taylor, Fitzy or the Ballarat FL bloke, Liam Brady. I expected comments as to how the Roosters having no DL team will affect Ballarat and other leagues.

TOUGH North Ballarat onballer Steve Clifton has captured the Victorian Football League’s highest individual honour in a three-way tie.
Clifton, Geelong’s Jordan Schroder and Box Hill’s Mitch Hallahan were declared joint JJ Liston Trophy winners on 17 votes apiece in Etihad Stadium’s Victory Room last night.
Northern Blues Kane Lambert fell one vote shy of completing a historic four-way tie.
This is the second time Clifton has pulled on the prestigious medal, becoming the first Rooster in the club’s history to achieve the feat.

Essendon's controversial season is over in all facets after its VFL team lost by 19 points to the Werribee Tigers in an elimination final at North Port Oval on Sunday.
Luke McDonald's final-quarter goal sealed the Tigers' win and they now advance to a cut-throat semi-final against the Casey Scorpions, who have had a disastrous finals run in recent seasons.
The Bombers' main contributor was Cory Dell'Olio, who kicked five goals and kept the Bombers within striking distance at the last change, although a Ben Speight goal right on the three-quarter-time siren hurt.

Werribee had the strong breeze at its back and a 16-point lead going into the final change and finished the game ahead with 17.14 (116) to 15.7 (97).

Port Melbourne has breathed new life into the VFL finals with a stunning 25-point win over Collingwood in an elimination final at North Port Oval on Saturday.
While reigning premier Geelong is clearly the team to beat following its comfortable victory over Casey in a qualifying final on Friday night, the Borough is eyeing the possibility of a showdown against the Cats if it gets past arch-rival Williamstown in a semi-final next week.
Former Magpie Julian Rowe stung the Borough into action with two first-quarter goals but it was Heath O'Farrell who drove the stake into the Pies' hearts with three goals in the last quarter.
Midfield warrior Toby Pinwill, speedy Nathan Batsanis and Danny Hughes, who has blossomed heading into spring, were the keys to Port's victory, while former Bulldog and Hawk Wayde Skipper was influential against Collingwood veterans Ben Hudson and Darren Jolly.
