VFL ROUND 4 – Northern Bullants v Tasmania

The Northern Bullants overcame some shocking finishing and a spirited comeback to defeat Tasmania by 10 points in a firey encounter at Princes Park this afternoon.

Both sides were fired up for the game, several scuffles breaking out throughout the day, but it was the Ants who held their nerve to kick the last goal of the match, put the Devils’ challenge to rest and run out winners 11.18.84 to 10.14.74.

Prior to that, it looked as though Tasmania would run over the top of the Bullants after the Devils kicked the final three goals of the third term and the first of the last to turn a 20-point deficit into 4-point lead.

The deficit would have been even greater had the Bullants been able to finish off their good work, a series of behinds early in the third almost proving their downfall.

But playing coach David Teague stepped up, an inspirational goal midway through the final term giving his side some breathing space before David Ellard kicked the sealer, a tumbling drop punt from 65m, to get them over the line.

Roosters hope to build on great early success

NORTH Ballarat captain Shaune Moloney believes the Roosters are reaping the benefits of the lesson dealt out to them by Geelong in a VFL preliminary final last year.
"Geelong showed us where we need to be," he said.

"They showed that we needed to step up in our preparation."

The Cats steamrolled the Selkirk Roosters in the last quarter of the final - producing a nine-goal blitz to win by 62 points and go on to take out the VFL premiership.

"We've got a really committed bunch of fellows.

"It's been obvious right through the pre-season and into the start of the season," Moloney said.

Tasmania's VFL coach Daryn Cresswell has attempted to lure former West Coast Eagles star Ben Cousins to the Devils.

Cousins was banned for a year by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute but he is allowed to play at a lower level.

The premiership player and Brownlow medallist has been invited to train with the Devils but is yet to take up the offer.

Cairns based Doug Egerton who was an avid Box Hill fan when they were a struggling 2nd Division club in the mid 70s to the early 80s has won the seven winners jackpot. There were only two tipsters who picked seven.
Yours truly actually picked seven as well as Doug who was nearest the aggregate score as he picked 247 points where as I selected 190. Tassie
125 d Geelong 101 for a total of 226 points. Doug collects $60. He can drink a few xxxx beers up north. Another $30 will go to the tipster who picks all seven winners. If more than one tipster selects seven winners, the tipster nearest the aggregate score for the Bullants v Tassie game will collect. If no tipster picks seven it will jackpot to $60 for Round
5.

AGGREGATE SCORE AN AMAZING NINE WAY TIE

Nine tipsters tied for the aggregate score (Tassie 125 v Geelong 101)
226 point in total.
Stephen '1980 Liston' Allender had 227 points, Adam 'Beachy' Beach last season's VFL tips runner up, had 225 points, Geelong fan Mark Rasmussen had 227 points, Sandy fan Trevor 'TC' Clark had 225 points, Billy 'Bulldog' Hector had 227 points, Darren "Dazzling' Hayes had 225 points, Denis Lacy who is a former Heidelberg, Port and Warburton player had 227 points, Kelly Direen a Tassie devil has 225 points, and Rick Woodstock a former Sunshine diehard had 225 points. Amazingly no one had the score of 226 points. each tipster will receive $5 each. Gets you a can of VB at the footy. From the nine tipsters that have not yet paid I will deduct $5 from the $20 tipping fee. For those that have already paid I'll catch up with you soon. One point extra or less from one of the none tipsters could have been $40 instead of $5. The next ABC aggregate score match will be will be the Round 5 clash between Sandringham v Bendigo at Trevor Barker Beach Road Oval.

LOGJAM AT THE TOP

Three tipsters share the lead with 17 winners and are one ahead of a swag of them. Old mustang and Cairns based Doug leads with Paul Saints who has corrected me that he is a Casey Scorpions fan. yours truly is also on 17 tips for the season. I followed Northcote in 2nd Division as a kid with Williamstown next best being my 1st Division team. These days it is Williamstown but also have soft spots for stand alone teams Port, Frankston and the Tassie devils.
On 16 winners are diehard Port fan Bobby Borough who was watching the borough when red rattlers were running to North Port Oval for matches.
He was at North Port well before Fred Cook joined the borough in 1971 from Yarraville. Also on 16 winners are Felicia Holland who has red and white all over as her dad played for South Melbourne between 1946 and 48. She has a leaning towards the dolphins in the VFL. Others on 16 include Gary 'Fitzroy fan' Ritchie, Kelly Direen who hails from the apple isle and would be tinkled pink with Richmond's win over Freo as well as the devils victory over Geelong. Parry Paras an old Northcote Dragons fan, Vaughan Shannon a Bendigo Bomber as well as Rosalyn Townsend who goes for the seagulls..

Tall timber topples magpies

From the Preston Leader

THERE is an old saying in football: no matter how long the game goes, the tall blokes don't get any shorter.

For the Northern Bullants on Saturday, that rang true as their tall timber up forward proved too strong for Collingwood in the last quarter of the Round 3 VFL clash at Princes Park.

Throughout the contest the Bullants looked the better side but couldn't break away from the plucky Magpies who held firm for most of the game.

But, as the Bullants did against Coburg in Round 2, come the last quarter they had too much strength as they raced away to a convincing 20.8 (128) to 12.5 (77) win.

Jake Edwards was a key to the last-quarter onslaught that resulted in eight goals. Quiet for most of the match, Edwards exploded in the final term with three goals.

GEELONG forward Shannon Byrnes is a white-hot favourite for senior recall this week after an eye-catching performance in the VFL at Tasmania's Bellerive Oval on Saturday.

Byrnes was the standout as a number of the Cats' fringe players did well, but their efforts weren't enough to resist Tasmania's rampaging final-quarter surge, with the Devils winning 18.17 (125) to 15.11 (101).

Geelong coach Leigh Tudor praised the commitment of the small forward, who collected 36 possessions to answer his doubters after he was replaced in the Cats' AFL team by Ryan Gamble last week.

"Shannon Byrnes ... has always been an excellent VFL player, so to come back again and perform the way he has is a credit to him," Tudor said.

Promoted off the rookie list at the end of last season, Jason Davenport was in scintillating touch early, winning plenty of ball in the midfield, and floating into attack to kick four goals before half-time.
