VFL Round 16 - Robbo\'s preview

SATURDAY

Geelong(6-9 10th) vs Collingwood(4-11 12th) at Skilled Stadium 1:10pm (ABC1(Victoria))
Last Meeting: Round 5 4th May at Carlton. Geelong 19-9(123) def Collingwood 10-7(67)

These two sides are going into this game in totally different form. Geelong are coming off a 22 goal hiding to league leaders North Ballarat at home two weeks ago. Collingwood got off the bottom of the ladder with a 15 goal win over Bendigo Bombers this past weekend. Geelong should win in a close one as they have more to play for, Win and they remain a slight finals chance, lose and the finals are out of reach.

Tasmania(4-11 13th) vs Williamstown(12-3 2nd) at Bellerive Oval 2pm (ABC1(Tasmania))
Last Meeting: Round 20 2007 25th August at Bellerive. Williamstown 21-21(147) def Tasmania 15-9(99)

Tasmania were woeful against Sandringham and lucky the final margin did not exceed 100 points. Williamstown will be looking at this game to get back on track after a surprise loss to Coburg. Williamstown to win by plenty.

Port Melbourne(11-4 3rd) vs Werribee(9-6 5th) at TEAC Oval 2pm (Casey Radio, 3XX 1611)
Last Meeting: Round 6 10th May at Werribee. Werribee 16-19(115) def Port Melbourne 15-10(100)

Port Melbourne will hoping the form they showed against Frankston was a one off. Werribee are surging towards a possible top 4 spot. This will be a cracker.

Box Hill Hawks(3-12 14th) vs Casey Scorpions(10-5 4th) at Box Hill 2pm (3WBC)
Last Meeting: Round 3 12th April at Casey Fields(night). Casey Scorpions 18-14(122) def Box Hill Hawks 13-11(89)

Casey Scorpions need to get back on track and keep Werribee at bay for the 4th position and double chance in the finals. Casey should win this game but can Box Hill cause an upset and give themselves a chance of getting off the bottom of the ladder?

Frankston caused a boilover in the second half of Round 15 today, defeating the previously red-hot Port Melbourne by 26 points in front of a big home crowd at Frankston Oval to keep their finals hopes alive.

Going in against the form team of the competition, the Dolphins needed to come out firing and from the opening bounce it was clear they were intent on doing just that - looking like a team with a point to prove, attacking the ball harder than their opposition as they dominated all over the ground.

But for all their good work, it looked like they would be unable to take advantage of the ascendancy as they wasted a series of gettable chances to put on four behinds before the first goal came through Aaron Murray.

FRANKSTON proved it is still a force to be reckoned with this season, upsetting highly fancied Port Melbourne by 26 points at Frankston Oval yesterday, in a clash of the VFL's stand-alone teams.

Having had agonising losses to premiership contenders Williamstown and Werribee in recent weeks, Frankston coach Brett Lovett was hellbent on beating Port, which would have taken top spot along with premiership favouritism with a win yesterday. Frankston won 13.14 (92) to 9.12 (66).

After a terrific first quarter, a trademark of the Dolphins' play this season, Frankston held a 30-point lead at the first change, an advantage that would ultimately prove beyond Port Melbourne's reach.

Baird milestone inspires Borough

RED-HOT Port Melbourne will have a double incentive to win its ninth straight match when it travels to Frankston Oval today.

The third-placed Borough (11-3) will look to celebrate John Baird's 100th VFL game and 50th for the club with a win that would see it overtake second-placed Williamstown on the ladder.

Amazingly, the laid-back 28-year-old didn't know of the impending milestones until contacted by the Herald Sun.

The 192cm, 95kg defender started his VFL career with Box Hill, helping the club win its only premiership in 2001, before he was drafted to North Melbourne. He played 46 games under Denis Pagan and later Dean Laidley.

Baird said he was disappointed he did not play more games for the Roos.
