Round 18 Preview

Well there are just 3 weeks to the finals and things are really hotting up here is the preview for Round 18.

SATURDAY
North Ballarat(14-3 1st) vs Northern Bullants(8-9 8th) at Austar Arena 1:10pm (ABC1)
Last Meeting: Round 7 18th May at Preston. Northern Bullants 16-9(105) def North Ballarat 9-9(63).

This game has a lot riding on it with the Roosters looking at consolidating its one game buffer at the top of the ladder. The Bullants need to win otherwise the Zebras and the Cats can replace them in the eight. The Bullants have a good record against the Roosters.

Coburg Tigers(9-8 7th) vs Sandringham(7-10 9th) at ABD Group Stadium,Coburg 2pm (3XX)
Last Meeting: Round 20 2007 25th August at Sandringham. Coburg Tigers 18-13(121) def Sandringham 13-24(102).

Coburg can almost book their spot in the finals with a win in this game but for the Zebras if they win the can move into 8th position should the Bullants lose. This should be a close contest.

Werribee(10-7 5th) vs Box Hill Hawks(5-12 11th) at Bartercard Oval 2pm (Casey Radio)
Last Meeting: Round 10 15th June at Box Hill. Box Hill Hawks 13-12(90) def Werribee 11-16(82).

A win for the Tigers and they could move into the top 4 should the Scorpions lose. A loss they can fall as low as 7th. Box Hill are coming off their best win of the season by far against the Bombers. A danger game for the Tigers.

Williamstown(13-4 2nd) vs Bendigo Bombers(5-12 13th) at Burbank Oval 2pm
Last Meeting: Round 7 18th May at QEO,Bendigo. Williamstown 19-13(127) def Bendigo Bombers 13-12(90).

Williamstown can go back to top spot should the Roosters lose. The Seagulls should win easily. Bendigo have been thrashed in their last 3 games and may yet finish with the wooden spoon. Who knows how much the Williamstown reserves can win by?

Collingwood(5-12 12th) vs Tasmania(4-13 14th) at MC Labour Park 2pm
1st Meeting between these two sides

The Pies are in good form and Tasmania had a good go at the Dolphins before running out of puff. The Pies will go in as favorites and should win this one.

Port Melbourne reports sour win over Williamstown

Port Melbourne was bold and brave in its rousing victory against fellow flag contenders Williamstown, Port coach Gary Ayres said last night.

Despite the reports of David Robbins (for allegedly kicking) and leading goalkicker Adrian Bonaddio - both before half-time - Ayres said Port's run of 10 wins from their past 11 starts is proof of his team's quality.

"Are you on?" he urged the players in a rousing pre-match address. "It's all about standing up. That's the deal."

Bulldogs-listed player, Williamstown's Cameron Wight, was taken to hospital bleeding from the jaw after the Robbins report.

Williamstown coach Brad Gotch said: "Our doctor couldn't stop the bleeding. It was the best option."

ABC Grandstand travels to North Port Oval this weekend to bring you a mouth-watering clash between two genuine premiership contenders as Port Melbourne host Williamstown - and you can see all the action live from 1pm.

The teams currently sit in second and third spots on the ladder, and with the Scorpions two games off the pace in fourth, the result of the match will have a huge bearing on the final order of the top three.

Port bounced back from their shock Round 15 loss to Frankston with a 10-goal thumping of Werribee last week, a win which came on the back of a forward line that failed to fire the week before. 

Toby Pinwill dominated to boot six goals, but it was the lift that came from Adrian Bonaddio, Chris Cain and midfielder David Spriggs that really did the damage for the Borough, the trio adding the spark that was so lacking in the Frankston game.

No tipster selected seven winners where the jackpot will now be $90.

Tipster that picks seven winners will collect. If more than one tipster selects seven winners, the tipster nearest the aggregate score will collect. If no tipster picks seven winners, the jackpot will be $120 for Round 18. 

Steve 'Liston' Allender was one of three tipsters who topped the round with six winners and now finds himself with 80 winners and 3 tips off the lead. He would have been proud of the borough's win against the bees. 

Graham Cooper also picked six winners. Graham ventured to North Port Oval (Teac Oval) for Port's win against Werribee was an old Box Hill Mustangs supporter who frequently went to grounds like Westgarth Street Oval, Toorak Park and Yarraville Oval in the late 70s and early 80s. 

Laurie 'Hoggy' Holmes was the other tipster who picked seven winners. Hoggy still supports Box Hill where his grandfather played for Box Hill who would have been called the Whitehorse's back in the 30s and
40s.
