Before you all bite, I'm not talking standard of players.
I'm taking about FIXTURING! Tell me how it is fair when some sides play each other once, and then play others three times in a season? I don't think there would be a competition in the world that operates with such a lop sided, distorted and biased draw.
The integrity of the whole reserve grade fixture is compromised because of how poorly the fixture is done.
Not being awful but Springvale, Frankston and Coburg are traditionally reserves cellar dwellars. Now if a club say Werribee got 3 matches against Springvale, 2 against Frankston and 3 against Coburg they'd probably win the 8 games and get into the finals.
On the other hand, Box Hill might get 1 game against Springvale, 2 against Frankston and 1 against Coburg, then have Port Melbourne 3 times and Williamstown 3 times.
Who decides who meets each other three times in a season???
It's not fair that it comes down to cheap games getting sides into the finals. Needs a total overhaul in the reserves so that no sides play each other in the reserves more than twice in a season. That way the genuine sides make the finals, not 5th being filled by the side lucky enough to get Springvale and Frankston three times.
And the same for the top of the draw too, 1st in the ressies is pretty valuable - can make a grand final with one win. So what if Willy beat Port to top spot by 1 win and that's because Willy had 3 games vs Springvale or Frankston???
The VFL Reserves wont be anything until the powers to be fix up the draw and make it "more even" than it is at the moment.
