Bit of a slow day... but have been doing some thinking, and wouldn't mind hearing a bit of discussion on this:

Something that has been a question for a long time in the VFL is how many members do each club boast?

I know the Scorpions have had a tally up on their website the last few years, and they have had around the 350-400 mark. Just who that is or what type of member they are i'm not quite sure.

Does any one know how many members their clubs tend to get?

The current situation with the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL has created a surge where they are currently approaching 6000 paid up members for the 2010 season.

Most SANFL clubs for the last 5 or so years have had around about 2000-3000, I think the Port Magpies had about 2600 last season.

This got me thinking how much cash flow memberships can actually produce for clubs. Most VFL clubs list a base membership at $60. Imagine 6000 members for the Scorpions: 6000 x 60 = $360,000.

That is money that most VFL clubs would only dream about these days.

Are VFL clubs doing enough to encourage potential members to take out memberships? What is it that is holding people back from buying memberships?

What would happen if say a Port Melbourne or Williamstown were in a similar position to the Port Magpies? would we see a similar surge in Membership etc. with the history that these clubs hold?
