From Ballarat Courier Full article Click here NORTH Ballarat can become the undisputed king of the Victorian Football League by completing back-to-back premierships on Friday night. Having waited 13 years to capture their first VFL flag, the Selkirk Roosters can make it two in a row against the Carlton-aligned Northern Bullants at Etihad Stadium. North Ballarat stormed into the grand final with a crushing 61-point victory over Collingwood at Port Melbourne on Saturday, 22.14 (146) to 12.13 (85). The Roosters took the match away from Collingwood with a scintillating nine-goal third quarter. The Magpies hit the lead with a goal just 30 seconds into the term after a sea-sawing first half. |

From The Age Reported by Brent Diamond Full article Click here A SPEEDY Northern Bullants are set to test reigning premier North Ballarat's pace in Friday night's VFL grand final after making Port Melbourne appear slow in its upset 21-point preliminary final victory at TEAC Oval yesterday. Carlton speedster Chris Yarran was flashy and best on ground with five goals and 25 disposals, providing a backbone for what could be the beginning of an ominous 2010 campaign. Yarran, who was the No. 6 selection in the 2008 AFL draft, and his Blues sidekick Jeff Garlett, controlled proceedings in a dominant second term where the Bullants piled on six unanswered goals to steer a nine-point quarter-time buffer out to 43-points at the main break. Bullants coach David Teague believes Yarran and Garlett - who loom as the Bullants' secret weapons - will be even more effective at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. |

MYSTERY surrounds exactly who will line up for Collingwood against North Ballarat in a do-or-die Victorian Football League preliminary final at Port Melbourne today.
Speculation was rife yesterday that the Magpies' number-one ruckman Josh Fraser might be a late call-up for Collingwood to face Geelong in the AFL preliminary final tonight.

WILLIAMSTOWN has let go its 2003 premiership coach Bradley Gotch.
Gotch, who has steered the Seagulls for eight years, was told last night (Thursday) that he would not be reappointed.
His two-year contract to coach Williamstown and serve in a development role at its VFL partner the Western Bulldogs expired at the end of this season.
His departure followed the Seagulls' straight-sets finals exit and preliminary final appearances in 2006-07-08.
From Cairns.com.au Reported by Andrew Piva Full article Click here GOLD Coast Football Club chief executive Travis Auld says his club is serious about having a presence in the Far North and hopes to bring a VFL game to Cazalys next Âseason. Auld was a guest of AFL Cairns during the league’s presentation night and spoke of the Gold Coast’s journey to becoming the AFL’s 17th franchise. After playing in the TAC Cup this season, the Gold Coast will enter a side in next year’s VFL before joining the AFL in 2011. With Far Northern products Charlie Dixon and Rex Liddy on Gold Coast’s roster, Auld wants his club to be accepted across Queensland. "The VFL is an 18-game competition and we’ve agreed to play eight of those in Melbourne," he said. "The other 10 we want to spread the brand as wide as we can. "If there is an opportunity to play a game in Cairns we’ll definitely look at it and talk to the AFL about how we might fund that. "But it would certainly be exciting to get our brand into the Cairns market, particularly in that we’ve got a couple of players from this area. "We need the support of all of Queensland, not just the Gold Coast, and therefore the ability to get out there in the market and play some games elsewhere is good for our kids." With the AFL also pushing ahead with expansion into western Sydney, he said regions such as the Far North could provide future stars. "There is an enormous amount of talent up here... untapped talent," he said. |
