WILLIAMSTOWN dismantled top-four co-tenant Bendigo Bombers in ruthless fashion on Saturday, but skipper Brett Johnson is adamant his side is yet to find its best form.
The Seagulls dominated the match after quarter-time at Queen Elizabeth Oval to post an emphatic 25.16 (166) to 13.9 (87) win.
The result also served as a notice of warning to those who believe ladder-leader Port Melbourne already has one hand on the VFL premiership cup.
"It would probably be our best performance of the year," Johnson, who was named in his side's best players, said.
"We were playing for outright second spot, and we knew it was going to be a tough game, so we're pleased with the result.
"I think that was a step in the right direction, but I think there is still a lot more improvement left in us.
"We can have up to five changes each week with the (Western Bulldogs) alignment, so we've just got to make sure each week we prepare well."
After trailing by 18 points at the first change, the Seagulls kicked 23 goals to eight in the final three quarters. Bulldogs-listed player Jarrad Grant feasted on a flowing supply from the midfield and finished with eight majors, while Andrew Hooper (four goals), Nathan Djerrkura and Josh Hill all pressed their claims for a spot in the AFL side.
Brian Lake also did his chances of a recall no harm by contributing three goals.
Johnson lauded the even contribution and said the Seagulls were cleaner after quarter-time.
"I think we still played well in the first quarter," he said. "They had a slight breeze, but we won all the stats. We just didn't convert going inside 50. I think our effort was there, it was just that we weren't finishing off our good work."
The Seagulls will next face Northern Bullants on Sunday.
