THE VFL competition appears likely to stay despite debate about an AFL reserves competition; however, the format is unlikely to be known until later this year. Several formats have been touted, including a two-tier competition.
The new AFL Victoria Limited hierarchy, which features key personnel from the AFL, is prepared to back the current VFL clubs despite a resurgence of AFL clubs wanting to field stand-alone teams in the competition from next season.
Richmond, St Kilda and Melbourne appear to be the latest teams to show interest in fielding stand-alone clubs in the VFL. However, those VFL affiliates, Coburg, Sandringham and Casey rely heavily on the financial input from their AFL partner in order to survive.
