Body:
Although I do prefer the non AFL involved league I suggested in a recent post (see possible football victoria restructure?) but if AFL teams will play a part in the future of the VFL competition, and the TAC Cup remains as is, how about a split conference system used in american sports?
It would consist of a VFL conference and an AFL conference.
The obvious benefits are that AFL teams get to control their own players whilst still getting a good game of footy against seasoned VFL bodies.
The VFL clubs on the other hand are still competing against elite footballers and still receiving media exposure as a result.
If anything it at least gives the league a structure rather than the mess that it is now?
The winner of each conference would play off for the Grand Final.
Might create a nice little conference rivalry?
AFL Conference:
Carlton
Collingwood
Essendon
Geelong
Hawthorn
Kangaroos
Melbourne
Richmond
St Kilda
Sydney
Western Bulldogs
VFL Conference:
Bendigo
Box Hill
Casey Scorpians
Coburg
Frankston
North Ballarat
Northern Bullants
Port Melbourne
Sandringham
Tasmania
Werribee
Williamstown
23 teams.....22 rounds....everyone plays each other once? (fits nicely into the AFL calendar)
Just throwing up ideas?
Cheers.
