THE Frankston Dolphins Football Club can survive its dire financial woes and kick on in the VFL, a packed meeting has been told.

“We are not putting mission impossible on the table. It’s all doable,” former Melbourne Storm boss Ron Gauci said.

Speaking to supporters, members and players at Frankston Park last night, Mr Gauci — who has

been called in to help save the club — said it was essential the right people were put in the right positions.

He noted that community support was vital for the club, which is about $1.5 million in debt, to continue.

In a passionate speech, coach Pat Hill said players and coaching staff wanted to see more support.

“If everyone stands up behind us, we are all on board,” he said.

He made the comment after several people questioned whether players would stick with the club or quit.

Several Dolphins legends including former president Alan Wickes said it was essential supporters showed the same spirit that enabled the club recover from a grave financial position in 1977 before going on to win the Division 2 premiership the following year.

Administrators last night outlined a plan for the club to survive including boosting membership by 25 per cent and increasing sponsorship by $100,000.

CRIPPLED by debt, Frankston Football Club has gone into voluntary administration.

Only a few weeks after holding a major function at their new social club to celebrate their 50th year in the VFA/VFL, the Dolphins have called in an administrator to work through their financial situation and deal with creditors.

Worrells Solvency and Foresenic Accountants of Frankston has been appointed administrator.

But league sources suggest the Dolphins are determined to deal with their problems and play on in the state league.

The club is the only one in the VFL to have never been aligned with an AFL side. It has produced a number of AFL players over the years including Bulldog Matthew Boyd, Tiger Sam Lloyd and Essendon pair Mark Baguley and in-demand Michael Hibberd.

AFL great and Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres said this morning he was “shocked and saddened’’ at Frankston’s “current dire predicament’’.

He said he hoped the AFL and State Government would intervene and support the club.

“As a Victorian football community we need all the stand-alone clubs to be successful and competitive, and in the case of Frankston, with that whole region on their doorstep, I would think AFL Victoria would see them as extremely important,’’ he said.

FRANKSTON has got that winning feeling.

For the second time in three weeks, the Dolphins have pulled off a stirring victory after coming from behind to beat Coburg by five points in the wet Frankston Park on Sunday.

Frankston forward Nathan Gardiner’s goal from 53 metres out in the last quarter was the match winner.

It put the Dolphins in front with 10 minutes to go. Coburg spent the last five minutes attacking but Frankston would not be denied.

Frankston kicked the only two goals of the last quarter. Gardiner’s goal came after Jayden Cass booted the first, from a free kick, to cut Coburg’s lead to a point.

Frankston locks in coach Patrick Hill for two more years

FRANKSTON has reappointed coach Patrick Hill for two years and re-signed 30 players as it sets out for a more prosperous 2016.

As per a recommendation from football manager Brett Angwin, the Dolphins board locked in Hill last night.

The former Box Hill Hawks assistant confirmed he had been seeking a two-year deal. In its first season under Hill, Frankston finished 0-18 and with a percentage of 43.66, ending a rugged year with a humiliating 146-point loss at Port Melbourne.

The verdict: the Hawks have lost top-line midfielders in Xavier Murphy and Luke Andrew as well as the emerging Brandon Wood. But they’ve picked up former Tiger Cadeyn Williams and have good young players coming through in support of senior men Sam Iles, David Mirra, Marc Lock and Liam Tobin. Premiers in 2013 and runners-up last year, there’s no reason to think there will be a slackening of standards.

Player watch: Mitch O’Donnell. He’s as hard as a coffin nail and he’ll be granted more opportunity after an excellent pre-season.

SIMON Goosey’s voice was so gravelly you suspected he ate barbed wire for breakfast.

“I’m so proud of you boys,’’ the coach rasped, prompting another burst of applause for the Frankston players from supporters packed into the changerooms at Casey Fields.

“The Goose’’ was hoarse after an afternoon hollering in the box and then, more pleasurable, singing the club song.

The Dolphins have had some frustrating days this season, dropping matches they ought have won.

But their performance against the Casey Scorpions on Saturday could salve a few wounds from the earlier rounds and was a reminder of their talent and tenacity.

FRANKSTON Football Club president John Barry says the Dolphins at a delicate stage in their existence.

Struggling on and off the field, Frankston is in need of help, Barry insists.

Bendigo Gold announced last Wednesday that it would fold at the end of the season, unable to afford to continue as costs rise to field a stand-alone club in the VFL.

Barry said Frankston, more than any other time in its history, needed support.

He said once the new function centre, construction of which begins in a few weeks, was built the club will “make good money’’.

“It’s just holding on ’till then,’’ he said.

Barry said the Dolphins needed three things.
“We need support. We’ve still got supporter base even though we are losing,’’ he said.

'Robbo' clocks on for 200th match

TICKING along nicely, Frankston Dolphins timekeeper Michael Robinson officiated in his 200th VFL game last Friday.

He still laughs about the day at Visy Park in 2010 when the siren and emergency siren refused to work and he had to take extraordinary measures.

“We ended up sitting in the Northern Bullants’ vicepresident’s car honking the horn,’’ Robinson chuckled.

“The car was driven into the driveway in between the two stands and we just sat in the car.

“Originally we sat in Bryan Mace’s van and then at half-time the vice president came over and we used his car because it had a louder horn. It had comfy seats.’’ Robinson said being a timekeeper had a serious side – “concentration is the key’’ – but it was also a fun job.

“We have a lot of fun up in the box during the day. It’s not all serious,’’ he said.
He said he especially enjoyed working alongside of the timekeepers from Port Melbourne, Sandringham and Williamstown.

In his time at Frankston, Robinson said his top five Dolphins were Daniel Clarke, Michael Hibberd, Paul Kennedy, Aaron Edwards and Mark Baguley.
