Retired Borough Champs Form 2019 Assistant Coaching Trio

They were each champions for Port Melbourne on the field, and now three of the club’s greatest ever will be hoping to make an impact together off the field.

Sam Dwyer, Shane Valenti and Robin Nahas have been confirmed by Head Coach Gary Ayres as the three-pronged assistant coaching team to aid Ayres in working with the 2019 crop of Borough players.

PRESIDENT Michael Shulman says Port Melbourne will hold off on contract talks with coach Gary Ayres until the end of the season.

Shulman said Ayres was keen to discuss his future “sooner rather than later’’ but the club believed negotiations should start when Port’s season finished.

Ayres signed a one-year deal a few weeks after the Borough’s stunning 2017 premiership.

TWO weeks ago Isaac “Izzy’’ Conway was consoling his sister Sophie after she suffered an ACL injury while training with Richmond’s VFL Women’s team.

She was to make her debut for the Tigers the following day.

Now the 19-year-old Brisbane player must sit out the 2019 AFL W season.

Last Sunday the fickle finger of fortune dealt the Conways another blow when powerful Port Melbourne onballer Izzy sustained the same knee injury, cutting short what was shaping as a best-and-fairest year for the Borough.

Conway hobbled off the ground in the second quarter against Box Hill Hawks at the City Oval. Scans the following day confirmed he had ruptured the ACL in his left knee.

Port Phillip Council in bid to bring forward ground works at North Port Oval

IT has been booted off its ground for the third time season, but Port Melbourne Football Club is likely to get some good news about North Port Oval next week.

Port Phillip Council this afternoon confirmed it was trying to bring forward the planned reconstruction of the playing surface to this year.

If funding for the multimillion-dollar project is approved at a meeting on June 20 the works will start at the end of the season.

For Port Melbourne, the wait was worth it.

Owing to problems with the surface of the ground, the Borough had to shift their Round 1 and 2 matches away from North Port Oval.

It meant not only giving up two home games to start the season, but delaying the unfurling of the 2017 premiership flag won so thrillingly over Richmond.

Port finally returned to North Port on Saturday, for a Round 6 clash with Footscray, and shortly after 2pm club stalwarts Henry “Pug’’ Tucker and Henry Knight were given the honour of raising the flag.

Almost three hours later the club faithful were clapping again. The Borough posted a 33-point victory, 15.12 (102) to 10.9 (69), after an authoritative second half in which they kicked 10 goals to three.

When Port coach Gary Ayres saw the team sheets he must have been tempted to tap his senior assistant, former league ruckman Peter “Crackers’’ Keenan, on the shoulder and ask, “Couldn’t give us a quarter, could you big fella?’’

The Doggies went in with 200cm Tom Campbell, 205cm Tim English, 200cm Jordan Roughead and 197cm Jackson Trengove, as well as 196cm Nathan Mullenger-McHugh.

Borough Sign Ryan Pendlebury for Season 2018

Port Melbourne have pulled off a last-minute recruiting coup for season 2018 in adding highly-credentialed ex-Collingwood VFL key defender Ryan Pendlebury to its playing list.

Pendlebury is the younger brother of Collingwood skipper Scott and joins the Borough with 55 VFL games next to his name, which also included Team of the Year representation in 2015.

Originally from Gippsland, 25-year-old Pendlebury has previously played his best football on the opposition’s second and third tall forward.

With the departure of draftee Brody Mihocek, Brodie Murdoch (relocation) and Hugh Sandilands (retired) from the 2017 Premiership defensive unit, Pendlebury will be a welcome addition to the group as the season progresses.

Pendlebury is currently nursing a hamstring injury, and Port fans can expect to see him on the field in the next 3-4 weeks as he works through his recovery and match fitness.

Pendlebury will don guernsey number 48.

We welcome Ryan to the Borough and look forward to seeing him in action over the next few months!
