Coburg’s positive about future in the VFL
COBURG has described Frankston’s demise as a “wake-up call” but says it has a long-term vision, which will ensure it remains viable well into the future.
The debt-ridden Dolphins had their VFL licence for 2017 revoked late last month after the stand-alone club was forced into the hands of administrators.

Their departure means only four stand-alone sides will compete in the VFL next year — Coburg, Port Melbourne, Williamstown and North Ballarat — with the other 10 either aligned with or fully operated by AFL clubs.
Coburg general manager Craig Lees said the loss of Frankston was disappointing but the Lions were only getting stronger each year and were not going anywhere anytime soon.
“I guess it’s probably more a wake-up call for past players that love their footy club,” he said.
“If you don’t buy a membership or attend functions, you don’t know how long it’s going to be there for.
“You can only talk about how you govern your own footy club and we’ve got a really strong board and really strong sponsors so we’re really in a wonderful position.
“Our attendances have steadily climbed over the three years we’ve been stand-alone so as long as the team remains competitive and we keep producing draftees, we’ll be okay with the support of AFL Victoria.”
Lees said Coburg had established itself as a destination club since going stand-alone three years ago after Richmond broke away from the alignment to start its own VFL side.
“What we’ve done is just work within our means,” he said. “We haven’t been silly with player payments or any of that. We are here to provide that opportunity to TAC Cup players and we want to make sure we continue to build a really strong culture that develops young people.”
Coburg has had two major success stories since going alone, with Adam Saad drafted to Gold Coast Suns in 2014 and Michael Hartley finding his way to Essendon last year. There is interest in Lions Luke Ryan, Tom Goodwin and Robbie Fox heading into next month’s drafts.

Frankston Dolphins Football Club back from the brink after creditors accept deal for partial payment
“The mood of the meeting was reasonably positive. There was only one creditor against the proposal,” he said.
It’s understood Tabcorp — owed for poker machine licences — was the sole objector.
Dolphins great and steering committee member Peter Geddes said supporters were delighted they could now focus on regaining the club’s licence so it could re-enter the VFL in 2018.
Mr Geddes thanked Worrells and Frankston Council for their support in getting agreement on the deal from creditors.

RUMOUR turned to fact late this afternoon when Sandringham announced Lindsay Gilbee as its new senior coach.
The former Western Bulldogs star’s name had been linked with the position pretty much from the time Paul Hudson declared he would be standing down after two years and taking a break from coaching.
Gilbee is a development coach with the Sandy’s VFL affiliate St Kilda and has been with the club since the end of 2013.
In that time he has been a regular at Zebra matches.
“As a St Kilda development coach he has worked with our coaches and players over the past three years,’’ Sandringham general manager John Mennie said.
“Lindsay is respected by everyone at the Zebras and we look forward to him guiding the club to a very successful season.’’
Gilbee said he was looking forward to his first senior coaching position.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity to coach the Zebras and continue working with some of the young players in the Saints and Sandringham system,” he said.
Brilliantly skilled and one of the best kicks in the game, Gilbee made 206 appearances for the Western Bulldogs from 2001-2012.
Off-season moves... And it's our very own Robbo!
Frankston legend Michael 'Robbo' Robinson has just confirmed that this afternoon he has accepted a role at the Sandringham Football Club working in the Time-Keepers position for the 2017 Peter Jackson VFL season.
'Robbo' has stated that he intends to return to his position at Frankston when the club rejoins the competition in 2018.
Robbo won't be lost to Frankston in 2017 however, helping out with club functions throughout the season.
I'm sure I speak for everyone here, in wishing Robbo all the best at the Zebras in 2017.
